Years before I knew the name of my newest interview subject, Ve Neill, I was witness to her work on some of the most enjoyable movies of my youth. From Beetlejuice (which won her the first of three Best Makeup Oscars) to Mrs. Doubtfire (which won her a second Best Makeup Oscar) to the Batman sequels, Ve Neill helped create some of the most memorable images the screen has ever seen. I’d been wanting to interview her about her life and work for several years now, and earlier this month, it finally happened. Join me as we talk about Ve’s life and work from the 70s to today and into the future.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Walt Disney Studios finally released the first trailer for the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, which is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. You can check out the new video in the player below. The sequel hits theaters in May 2017.
It’s a well known fact, that just because you have a hit movie, doesn’t mean the sequel (or sequels) will live up the grandness of the first film. It’s happened many times that some often wonder why a franchise didn’t just stay a single memorable film. Such is the case with Pirates of the Caribbean. The first movie was a revelation, the second was good, but not as great, three had some great moments, and four…well let’s not talk about four.
When the first Pirates of the Caribbean film was released in theaters it was a quick success and one of the favorite summer films of 2003. The film appealed to those of all ages as it was simply a great and entertaining action film that hit on all the points that make a good film (director, writers, characters, actors and, of course, story) and it came as no surprise to me that the sequel, Dead Man’s Chest, opened to huge numbers. What did surprise me is just how much it made in theaters (I think that surprised just about everyone), but if there are plenty of fans like my sister who saw it six times within the first two weeks of its theatrical run, it’s no surprise who the film made so much.
