Spongebob: Krusty Cook-Off was announced last September, and it’s almost ready to open. It’s a mobile game developed by Tilting Point and Nukebox Studios, the two teams behind Food Truck Chef — a game that tasks you with flipping burgers and serving orders as quickly as possible. Last E3, THQ Nordic revealed it was working on a remake of the Gamecube-era title Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom. Similarly to the Crash and Spyro trilogy remakes released recently, as well as the Link’s Awakening remake, this will basically be the same game only with more polish and polygons. A long long time ago, Nickelodeon cancelled Rocko’s Modern Life after four seasons. An even LONGER time ago (at least it feels like it), Nickelodeon greenlit a new follow-up movie bringing Rocko and his friends back to the HD present. We’ve barely seen it, while Nick has chosen to sit on it for years. What happened was that Nick ordered three Nicktoon revival movies based on Hey Arnold, Rocko and Invader Zim, but after the first of these aired and didn’t get the ratings they desired, Nick no longer had a vested interest in airing the other two. Rocko and Zim were doomed to gather dust on the Viacom shelf until Netflix expressed interest in releasing them instead. It was revealed today that the TV movies Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, previously produced for Nickelodeon, have been sold to Netflix. Why is this big news? Because unlike Nickelodeon, Netflix might actually make these movies available. Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling joins the wallaby, cow and turtle where the show last left them in 1996: stranded in space. Having finally returned to Earth, Heffer and Filburt are overjoyed by all the advances in technology…..but Rocko, being Rocko, is cautious and nervous about it all. When you go to the theater and the trailers start, part of the game is trying to figure out which licensed property the current trailer is based on before the title comes up. In this day and age, no investor will finance any blockbuster film that isn’t based on a pre-existing IP, so if a trailer starts and a hippopotamus appears, you think “this must be a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie.” Or if a chef in a white hat appears, you think “this is a Chef Boyardee movie.” The moment this one starts, though, it’s a little hard to believe. Just a few short years ago, Star Trek felt pretty dead as a platform. Now there are truckloads of Trek-related material being produced — Discovery is on its second season, and a record four TV programs are now in development set in Kirk’s universe, ranging from comedy to drama to a spy show starring Michelle Yeoh. The catch: the solid majority of these shows are meant for one singular streaming service owned by stodgy TV institution CBS. Until today. Paramount announced they’re currently developing a Star Trek series for another channel….well, it’s actually a Nickelodeon cartoon. But at least you won’t have to pay extra to watch the thing. If the production goes all the way to completion, it would actually be the SECOND Star Trek kiddie cartoon to exist. The first was made back in the 1970s by Filmation, and aired on Saturday mornings. Netflix announced today that, in cooperation with Nickelodeon, they are reviving the classic Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon in the form of a live-action series. It’s quite bold when you consider what happened the LAST time someone did that. M. Night Shaymalan came out with his own live-action adaption, The Last Airbender, in 2010 and the film was an absolute flop, both commercially and critically. it left a stain on what was then a blemish-free brand, which took The Legend of Korra to cleanse away (and even then, we have Season 2 of Korra to deal with). But this time, series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be personally involved, both as executive producers and showrunners. Shaymalan will be let nowhere near this production. During a recent episode of the Nick Animation Podcast (via Gameranx), Fred Seibert dropped a very interesting rumor regarding a possible, upcoming animated series on Nickelodeon. Per the report, Nickelodeon is developing a TV series that is rumored to be based on the characters of Nintendo. Other details are currently vague. Seibert only said during the podcast that Nickelodeon is working on a series based a “world famous video game of the last 30 years.” That doesn’t exactly narrow it down. However, Gameranx’s report indicates that it’s rumored to be a Nintendo-based series. Seibert stated: “We have a project now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for twelve years without being able to get it started.
