One of the common complaints lobbied against director Paul W.S. Anderson and his many video game-based movies is that he has this tendency to ignore the game’s stars and story. Instead he invents a character, casts his wife as that character, and bases the whole movie around her. If he had made the Sonic movie, its main focus would be Zippietta, a human-hedgehog hybrid played by Milla Jovovich with speed powers. But it’s Capcom he’s working for these days, specifically an adaption of Monster Hunter that’s due out Christmas Day. True to form, he’s invented Captain Natalie Artemis, played by Jovovich, as a monster hunter who doesn’t appear in any of the games…..YET. Capcom decided to fix this one and stick Artemis in there. A brief string of clips from Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter movie surfaced today. They were shown off at the Shanghai International Film Festival, and secretly recorded with a cell phone. It’s the first look anybody in the world has gotten at the monsters in the movie. Last year during NYCC, Capcom and Sony Pictures announced they were developing a Monster Hunter movie. Now we know when the long-running video game series will make its big-screen debut: September 2020. The husband-and-wife team of Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich will be involved. He directs, she stars — the usual deal. They have worked with both Sony and Capcom before at making a whopping six movies out of the latter’s Resident Evil franchise. We figure Paul and Milla’s Monster Hunter adaption will hit the same thematic notes as all their Resident Evil movies did. Expect lots of slo-mo dodging of hazards. We are definitely getting a movie based on Capcom’s international hit game series Monster Hunter. Constantin Films announced at Cannes that the movie will begin shooting in September, and that its lead star has been cast: Milla Jovovich. That name may cause people to wonder if this upcoming film will be anything like the Resident Evil series. Actually, it’ll be EXACTLY like that. The writer is Paul W. S. Resident Evil is back in the news again, with both a new game (getting excellent reviews) and a new movie (getting less-than-excellent ones). Sony Pictures, the studio that’s bankrolled the series since 2002, doesn’t seem to be worried about the critics. They’re pointing out that the film franchise has now crossed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing (video game related) movie series in Movieland. “Resident Evil is an event film internationally,” Sony Pictures executive Josh Greenstein gushed to Deadline. “It’s been five years since the last film, and the global fanbase has been eagerly anticipating its return. Screen Gems has created the highest-grossing video game-based franchise of all time. Resident Evil is the name of a popular action-horror video game series, and it’s also the name of a long string of movies that are ostensibly based on the games, but are actually tales of fanfiction some guy is writing about his wife.
