2017 was the year Nintendo pulled the plug on most Wii U-era services, including the console’s exclusive social media hub known as Miiverse. With the loss of the server might have come the erasure of thousands of crazy, mindless posts and drawings — but have no fear, the obsessive archivists of the Internet have come to your rescue.
If anything signals that Nintendo is running away from their Wii U era as fast as possible, it’s this: Miiverse is about to be shut down. The unique social messaging service was created for the Wii U gamepad and later ported to 3DS. The move was confirmed for Japan yesterday, and confirmed globally today.
Nintendo’s message board service and meme-spreader known as Miiverse has been disorganized since its inception. Usually you make a post, it drops down a hole and only two or three people see it. Maybe they comment on it. Then your post is buried under the pile of newer posts. Thankfully, they’ve been working on a fix. Nintendo has announced that Miiverse will be getting a redesign later this summer.
