Matt Groening’s Disenchantment originally had a deal for two seasons at Netflix, and was then renewed for two more. By the time Season 4 came out it was obvious the show was never going to take off in the same manner his previous shows have, and we figured four seasons would be all it’d have. But surprise — rumors of a fifth season were true. It is also confirmed that no, there will not be any more Disenchantment after this.
Bongo Comics, Matt Groening’s publishing house that mainly printed Simpsons and Futurama material (and assisted Stephen Hillenburg in the Spongebob Comics series), went out of business in 2018, and most people aren’t aware what a loss that truly was. With the Hollywood writer’s strike in full swing we’re hearing a lot of gripes about the studio system. Well, I have yet to hear a single complaint from a former worker about Bongo. It was pretty much the only publisher that WASN’T a profits-first, writers-last organization.
If you recall, Matt Groening has a new show, Disenchantment, which premiered on Netflix last year with ten episodes. The problem with Groening shows, though, is that they take a while to get going — both The Simpsons and Futurama didn’t hit the ground running, but grew spectacular once they found their groove. Netflix is significantly more stingy with their episode count, meaning a LOT of Disenchantment’s first season didn’t really work. Once the real plot kicked in, though, it had a strong finish. Can it ride that momentum for a solid Season 1B?
Bongo Comics, the publishing company founded by Matt Groening that mainly printed Simpsons-related material, exits the comic book market this month. It’s sad to see them go, but you couldn’t ask for a better sendoff than the tribute FilmSpringfield put together.
D’oh! Bongo Comics is turning out the lights and calling it quits. The comic publisher, founded by Matt Groening, mainly existed to publish comic books based on his Fox creations — Simpsons and Futurama. Alas, Bongo will not be around to comic-ify Netflix’s Disenchantment.
Last year Matt Groening announced he was finally producing a new animated series, called Disenchanted, this time for Netflix. At the time, we knew nothing. Less then two months out from release, we still knew nothing. Until today, when the first official trailer was released. Now we know…a little more than nothing. Seriously, there isn’t much to chew on here.
