Everyone’s eagerly awaiting Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the upcoming return to Gothic castles from the man who put the “vania” into Metroidvania, Koji Igarashi. However we already got a taste of the game, in a manner of speaking: last year Iga released a spinoff, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, that was rendered entirely in old-school 8-bit style. There will be a physical release for Ritual of the Night. But Curse of the Moon seemed doomed to digital damnation, until Limited Run stepped in. Today they announced a limited physical release for Curse of the Moon would be available starting March 15! The release will be for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch and PS Vita (yes, the Vita just ceased production….but Limited Run has a limited number of Vita releases left, and no one knows what the final one will be). The Switch version will be an open preorder, but the Sony versions require you to be at the computer at a specific time (9 AM or 6 PM EST, usually).

Limited Run Games, preservers of physical copies and defenders against a digital future, surprised everybody late last night when they revealed their plans to start selling games for the Playstation 3. You read the correct number. It’s a console Sony no longer even makes, but they will apparently authorize new discs and cases for it. And what will Limited Run be selling first? Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. Good for them. Formerly an XBox exclusive, a port of this game was published to the PS3 back in the day, but only on the Playstation Store….there was never a physical. Until now! Two batches off Stranger’s Wrath will be dumped at 10 AM ET/7 AM PT and 6 PM ET/3 PM PT. Also, for some reason, Limited Run isn’t limiting the amount of copies you can purchase on this one, and there are only 4,000 altogether, so….the average human’s chances of buying this legit are not good. Last month Limited Run Games pulled its biggest surprise release ever when they revealed they were bringing the Jak and Daxter trilogy to physical form — on PS4, that is. Jak 1 came out December 7, and Jaks 2 and 3 were promised later. Unfortunately this announcement was made the very day the first Jak and Daxter was made available, and with only 5,000 copies in total. Many people did not find out this product existed until the 6 AM sale had happened and half the copies were gone. Many more were not clued in until they all vanished. Limited Run has learned from the complaints and has vowed to do better. For one thing, you’re hearing about Jak II BEFORE the game is out. As you may have heard, Limited Run Games is publishing the one title gamers have been begging them to publish all year: Celeste. Preorders go live in a few days, and there WILL be a Collectors Edition of the title. Though Limited Run tends to offer Collectors Editions of most of its titles, Celeste is the one game we figure warrants its own report. Limited Run Games, up to this point, was known for producing small print runs for console indie games. Today they shattered that tradition and hooked their biggest client ever: Sony. A physical disc version of Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy suddenly appeared on the site early this morning. There was no warning from either company, other than a message about a “surprise PS4 release” that would happen December 7. If anything is more controversial than that, it’s how many copies were printed: 5,000, same number as their smaller titles. Limited Run has already confirmed that physical copies of Jak 2, Jak 3, and Jak X Extreme Combat Racing will be sold at some point, hopefully with prior warning this time. Limited Run Games is a website that prints physical copies of popular indie games in a limited capacity. Their typical product will only be made available within one month (with preorders), or will be sold with a set limit of copies (first come first serve). Until now, the Limited Run website was the only place those games could be bought in the physical world. Limited Run is popular enough of a venture now that they took the notice of Best Buy — the big, blue behemoths themselves. Best Buy entered a deal for Limited Run to produce a second shipment of their two most demanded 2018 titles — Yooka-Laylee and Golf Story for Switch. LRG offered both games on their website last summer, and due to the time it takes to print and manufacture the games, customers are only just now receiving their copies in the mail. If collectors of retro video games know one thing, it’s this: Sega CD cases were garbage. They were manufactured cheaply and broke when breathed upon, and as a result of this, it’s hard to find a Sega CD game in the wild that doesn’t come in a cracked case. What could be done about it? Until now, nothing. The cases Sega used for the Sega CD, and later for the Saturn, were of a weird shape unique to the product (though Sony used something similar for the Playstation’s first year). There’s an online store called Limited Run Games that specializes in taking indie and digital titles from the Playstation Store and creating official, logo-branded physical versions of them. Their small budget means they can only produce the most miniscule of print runs, but they use this to their advantage by creating amiibo-esque holy grails for collectors. Most recently they published around 1980 (get it?) copies of a retro-inspired game called Saturday Morning RPG. I had heard about the release, but soon forgot about it. Looks like it’s too late now. But it may not be too late for YOU, if you like Oddworld. A high-definition, remastered version of the original Abe’s Oddysee, entitled Oddworld: New ‘n Tasty, was released recently on the Playstation Store.
