GameChops is publishing a new album from Jokabi, creator of the Chilltendo lofi album series. This time he’s focusing on one specific corner of the Nintendo universe and introducing Zelda’s LoFi Kingdom, an entire suite of remixed tunes from the two Switch titles. Zelda’s LoFi Kingdom contains 14 arrangements including the Tears of the Kingdom title theme and boss theme, “The Lost Woods,” “Colgera Battle,” “Lurelin Village,” and “Great Fairy Fountain” among others. On three tracks Jokabi is joined by his brother Mikel (creator of Zelda & Chill). First off, let’s just get this out of the way: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 has been delayed. However, there is no Zelda fan on Earth who did not see this coming. In the last 25 years, the only mainline Zelda game that has met its original targeted release date is Majora’s Mask, which used mostly recycled assets. Other than that, delays on Zelda games are inevitable. Series producer Eiji Aonuma took to YouTube yesterday to formally apologize. “We previously announced that we were aiming for a 2022 release for this game,” he said. “However, we have decided to extend our development time a bit and change the release to Spring 2023. If you were going to adapt The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild into an animated film, which style would you choose? With the game’s vast open expanses, the clean yet detailed stylings of Studio Ghibli would be a solid choice. A team of fans in Korea have done just that, and created a trailer for a nonexistent Zelda Ghibli movie. You’d think it would be difficult to distill such a long and epic game into just two minutes, but directors Lee Jumi and Seon Seungyeon pull it off, sticking to snips from the most unforgettable cutscenes as well as brief representations of all four main quests in the game. From the beam of light that awakens Link to his final big showdown with Calamity Ganon, it’s all here and animated lushly. We have no idea how long this all took a team of just three animators. Last night Nintendo made the out-of-the-blue announcement that two of its most popular games of the Switch would soon be “VR Compatible.” Namely, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. In the case of Odyssey, three mini-games will be added that take advantage of the immersive view, and this is all you’ll be able to do. In the case of Zelda, the entire game will become a VR experience. That sounds amazing until you stop and think for a minute about what Nintendo really means here. They’re talking about the cardboard Labo VR set, due out April 12, that turns your Switch into as crude a VR device as you can imagine. At least those smartphone VR cradles used plastic. We’re not entirely sure if this will work. The thing about VR is that the eye is VERY hard to fool. The gamer community is in love with Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s received the highest critical scores of any video game in recent history and it’s singlehandedly made the Switch impossible to find. Personally, I would agree with the public: my favorite part of playing Zelda games is exploring, and it feels like this one was sent from heaven to me. After Skyward Sword boxed me in to three total areas, I was about to give up on playing a good console Zelda again…but boy howdy, did they learn from their error. Eiji Aonuma, who’s served as the Zelda series’ producer since Majora’s Mask, agrees that Breath of the Wild is a giant leap forward, and they have no plans to go back. “I think that, in the future, open air games will be the standard for Zelda,” Aonuma told Famitsu. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is incredibly well done. The graphics are awe-inspiring and the gameplay offers a solid and reliable experience. Breath of the Wild doesn’t give you enough opportunities to grow emotionally attached to the characters vital to story progression, but it does do a fantastic job of otherwise achieving the illusion that Link exists in a living, breathing, and fully realized world. This review contains some minor spoilers starting now. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link awakens in a chamber, clad in nothing but his skivvies. He’s been brought back to a post-apocalyptic Hyrule to fight and win the battle against Calamity Ganon he was sorely unprepared for 100 years prior. Without any memories of his previous life, Link must find armor, weapons, gather supplies, make new friends, find old ones and piece together how Hyrule was overtaken and what he must do to restore it. It’s harder to sneak material past the ESRB than it once was. Back in the 90’s Banjo and Kazooie could cram their games with subtle innuendo and get it all under the radar, but The Man is more alert to that sort of thing now. Open-world games are great, but they’ve historically lacked in one category: story. This is due to the nature of the game itself: stories are linear, and if you’re given the freedom to do whatever you want, controlling the flow of the story becomes impossible. Or does it? Today Game Informer published a video interview with Zelda creator Shigeru Muyamoto and Eiji Aonuma, producer of the next big Zelda game, Breath of the Wild. Since it appears to be an open-world game, they were asked about this problem — and Miyamoto just smiled and said Aonuma “knows how to do it.” “There is a little bit of a trick that I implemented this time,” Aonuma explained. “This idea is something I’ve had since I started developing games 20-some odd years ago. Nintendo’s been releasing a few new Zelda: Breath of the Wild images to the press over the last week. Let’s have a look at ’em…. This was released first….Link building a fire in a snowy mountainous region. Some kind of underground area where Link has his sword (right-handed again, sigh) and to counterattack, the Temple Guardian is holding a lightsaber in tribute of Carrie Fisher. Or not. A behind-the-scenes sketch of Link in a new outfit he can presumably utilize in snowy areas. And finally, this was released by Nintendo on Christmas. Nintendo dropped a new video for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild today. With the video, players got a glimpse of the return of the Koroks for the new, upcoming installment in the franchise. It looks like Nintendo is open to doing another type of multiplayer game for The Legend of Zelda franchise after the next installment in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The new installment was showcased at E3 this year and is due out later in 2017. Speaking to IGN, producer Eiji Aonuma said he would like to work on another multiplayer Zelda game next. Aonuma said, “I would like to take what I learned from Breath of the Wild and see if we can somehow fuse those learning points into another multiplayer Zelda. That’s definitely a possibility and we will continue to [experiment] throughout the Zelda franchise.” Zelda games in the past have featured multiplayer elements. So Nintendo trying something else out with multiplayer for the Zelda franchise wouldn’t be a radical departure. Tri Force Heroes, Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks all featured multiplayer. Even The Wind Waker had some limited multiplayer elements.
