The general goth aesthetic of Castlevania would seem to blend well with the aesthetic of metal considering the similarities in the art that adorns both genres. Yet it’s only now that we’re hearing about a metal album that ties itself directly to Konami’s long-running video game franchise. It was a long wait to see the obvious happen, but it’s here: Encuentro de Sangre: A Metal Tribute to Castlevania.
Silent Hill F is coming to PS5. The Silent Hill franchise has been in Limbo for a decade. We are suppose to have the game Silent Hills. This aborted relaunch contains an incredible demo named P.T that players have universally appreciated, which hurts a lot of fans. Silent Hills was a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro so you can imagine why fans got angry. That project’s cancellation by Konami thus infuriated a great number of fans.
For a long time now I’ve heard strategy game fans sing the praises of the Suikoden series, specifically the first and second game. I could not confirm their boasts of Suikoden II being one of the best strategy games of all time because it’s ridiculously expensive and always has been. I’m talking the days before ALL retro video games gained unreasonable prices…Suikoden II cost a king’s ransom back when game collecting was a thing the average person could affordably do.
Is Konami going to close their gaming division?
Ahh, the beloved shoot-em-up Contra. Half Rambo, half Aliens, there’s no better test of a gamer’s reflexes than to jump and dodge your way through projectile-crammed corridors while shooting gigantic gruesome bosses. It’s definitely one experience that can’t be served up any other way — or can it?
If I were the type who collected an endless number of figurines in the likeness of my favorite TV and video game properties, I would much prefer adorable little ducks to the giant, inky, soulless eyes of a Funko Pop. A company called Numskull Designs thought so too, and now produces a line of duck-ified versions of popular characters called Tubbz.
Somehow PT just won’t go away, no matter how badly Konami wants it to. The free demo was released to PS4 owners in 2014 as an advertisement / announcement for Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills. This game never happened due to Konami becoming corrupt and firing Kojima, who then found a home at Sony and just released his first original game in years, Death Stranding.
Hamster Co. has been doing great work converting both classic and obscure arcade titles to the Nintendo Switch. More recently they’ve been resurrecting Nintendo’s little-known “Vs” series of arcade cabinets. Between the days of direct arcade involvement (Donkey Kong, Punch-Out) and passive bone-throwing (Playchoice 10, Super System) we got a hybrid of sorts where the company would release “arcade” versions of upcoming NES games to test them in the market.
There’s a lot coming out in March 2020. Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the next Animal Crossing, and now the Turbografx-16 Mini. Konami revealed today the plug-and-play collectible will be out March 19, and will have nearly 50 games. And they revealed them all.
A lot of companies have released bite-sized plug-and-play versions of their 90s consoles now. There was a quiet market for such contraptions before, but once Nintendo started breaking the bank with its NES and SNES Classics, the field began flooding with competitors. Nintendo responded by stepping aside, refusing to make an N64 Classic, so it’s anyone’s game now.
For a certain generation of thumb-twitchers, there’s no experience greater than heading off into a pixelated bullet-hell world of enemy soldiers and aliens. Contra was one of the NES’s most popular games, and publisher Konami sequeled it many times, especially in the early 90s.
There are few retro experiences more satisfying than grabbing a whip and heading into Dracula’s Castle to smite the Lord of Darkness and hundreds of his minions, And next month Konami will be reprinting eight memorable outings for the Belmonts and their associates in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.
