You’ve got some friends coming to Kingdom Hearts Union X. Toy Story is here! The mobile spinoff to the Kingdom Hearts series is getting some familiar plastic visitors in the form of Woody, Buzz, Rex, Jessie and Hamm. (Slinky Dog and Mr. Potato Head were likely held back by licensing fees.) Does this have to do with Kingdom Hearts 3? Maybe, but the release of that game is seven months away. Kingdom Hearts is set to make a big splash at E3 2018 with new footage of Kingdom Hearts III, and hopefully, a release date for the title. However, that doesn’t mean that the other properties in the franchise are going unnoticed. Square Enix has revealed that their mobile title, Kingdom Hearts Union xCross, has just gotten a big update, one that including PVP for the first time in the franchise’s history. How PVP will work in Kingdom Hearts Union xCross is simple, you’ll get locked into a battle, and then get to choose multiple Keyblades for you to use. You’ll each get a chance to do massive damage to the other. The player that does the most damage wins the round. If you win two rounds, you win the match. You’ll also be ranked via your victories and the more you do, the more rewards you will get. It wasn’t that long ago we wrote about Tiger handhelds and how unplayable most of them were (if you’re too young to have experienced one, emulation is now a click away). There were other companies that managed to work with the limitations and produce some addictive games, though. The king of these was (naturally) Nintendo with their Game and Watch series of handhelds that predated the Game Boy, starting all the way back in 1980. Today Square revealed you’ll be able to keep busy during any downtime in Kingdom Hearts 3 by whipping out an LCD handheld device that looks very similar to a Game and Watch. Four minigames are rendered this way and fall under the banner “Classic Kingdom.” Sora and Mickey are rendered in the classic pen and ink style, and you can play simple games based on classic Mickey cartoons from the 1930s. While Kingdom Hearts III is currently only in development for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the series director Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that a later port to the Switch is definitely possible. Speaking with IGN, the developer explained how he would consider bringing the game to other platforms once they had finished development on the current versions. In a brief statement he said: “The Nintendo Switch is definitely a very interesting piece of hardware, but if we lightly say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll be on the Nintendo Switch,’ I’m sure people will come back and say, ‘But what about the PS4 and Xbox One? We want them out first. Don’t focus on other platforms.’ So for now, we want to focus on what platforms we’ve already announced we’re going to be releasing Kingdom Hearts III on. Kingdom Hearts III is easily one of the most anticipated games in recent memory, especially since its reveal at E3 a few years back. Last year, around this time, Square-Enix put out a Kingdom Hearts mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Mobile Adventure. Okay, that wasn’t really the title, and you knew that because it wasn’t confusing enough. The actual title was KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ. Ever since the launch, Square has been working on an upgrade for the app, and now it’s nearly ready. It adds a new multiplayer mode, new missions, and new ways for teams to communicate, as well as a more robust avatar creator. The upgrade is such an improvement that the app is going to be retitled, to something less confusing……ha! It’s really being retitled KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ[Cross]. Brackets included. With KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ[Cross], players can create teams of six from their party members or through a matchmaking feature to fight hordes of Heartless enemies and powerful bosses. Musical superstar Utada Hikaru is working on music for Kingdom Hearts III, confirming that at least one song from the artist will appear on the soundtrack for the game. The Japanese-American singer and songwriter became a hit in 1999 when she released the Japanese language album First Love. It sold more than eight million copies in the country and has become one of the most successful albums ever released in the region. While famous in Japan, she has remained less mainstream in Europe and the United States. However, she became more widely known with her work in the previous Kingdom Hearts game. The songs “Simple and Clean” from Kingdom Hearts and “Sanctuary” from Kingdom Hearts II became instant hits and have been remixed into new versions for various released in the franchise. It looks like Kingdom Hearts will be coming back in a big way next year. Square Enix has released the opening cinematic video for Kingdom hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. You can check out the new video in the player below. In the video, Aqua has been trapped in the Dark World since the events that took place in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. The story of Aqua continues in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. The clip also features a nice remix of Utada Hikaru’s “Simple and Clean – Ray of Hope.” It’s definitely nice to heart that song again for a Kingdom Hearts video. This release is on top of Kingdom Hearts III, which is also currently in the works. The Kingdom Hearts saga continues. Sony PlayStation released a new trailer this week for The Tokyo Game Show for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. You can check out the new video, featuring some new footage, at the player below. This video also debuted at Sony’s Tokyo Game Show press conference this week. The new video offers a look at some new scenes, including a meeting with the enigmatic Foretellers and also the Five Keyblade Masters from the Kingdom Hearts origin movie that’s included in the compilation. At E3, many were asking about Kingdom Hearts 3, and even Kingdom Hearts 2.8, which is both a recap of previous KH games and a teaser for what’s to come. In a chat with IGN, co-director Tai Yasue told IGN about the possibility of the previous compilation games Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 Final Mix coming to PS4: “We listen to our fans obviously so we’ll see what they think [about a collection] and we’ll come to a decision on that.” He also noted that the company is exploring all options for the possible compilation, including a port over to Xbox One, who will be getting Kingdom Hearts 3: “Right now we haven’t come to a decision on that,” explained Yasue when asked about that possibility. “Nothing’s been decided yet.”
