Kingdom Hearts 3 was released nearly a year ago, but its story isn’t over yet. Sora and his animated buddies are returning one more time in the ReMind DLC chapter, which arrives early next year. Exactly WHEN early next year depends on which console you played the original on. Playstation 4 is getting ReMind first, on January 23, 2020. XBox One gets it a month later on February 25. The DLC is not sold separately and will require the original game. What do you get: Aerith! Yuffie! Squall! Confirmed in the trailer, these denizens of Twilight Town were unexplainably missing from Kingdom Hearts 3 as a whole. The main game contained no Final Fantasy references, but the DLC will fix that. Plus, you’ll receive all these other things: The additional story: ReMind Limitcut episode and 13 boss battles Secret episode and boss battle Data greeting feature Slideshow feature Premium menu The “Premium Menu” will introduce new difficulty settings and gameplay challenges. Kingdom Hearts 3 may be a finished product, but it’s not over yet….a special DLC chapter, titled Re Mind, is heading our way early next year. We still have no specified release date, but thanks to Tokyo Game Show, we did get a new trailer. It’s two minutes long and it’s in Japanese, so you’ll need to turn on YouTube subtitles to understand the dialogue (we mean from a lingual perspective, for the plot you’re on your own). This winter, players can experience a new episode as they continue their adventure in the beloved action-RPG series, encountering new obstacles and bosses to battle. In the upcoming DLC, players travel to a familiar realm and encounter powerful new bosses. In some of the additional battles, players will be able to switch characters. In this day and age, you should have known Kingdom Hearts 3 wasn’t truly the end, even if it does wrap up a “trilogy.” There is DLC on the way, and it was confirmed at the Kingdom Hearts Ochestra: World of Tres performance in Los Angeles last night. Attendees of the concert got a surprise reveal of the DLC trailer on the big screen, and though they told everyone “no photography,” somebody sneaked a cell phone video and uploaded it that night. Fortunately, rather than fight the upload, Square did the smart thing and uploaded their own version a bit early. We’ll probably see this trailer at some of the conferences later today, but why wait — it’s here now. If you enjoy Kingdom Hearts 3, but feel the battles are a tad on the easy side, Square has introduced a solution: Critical Mode, their word for the new “hard mode” introduced with the game’s latest update. In Critical Mode, Sora starts out with only half his maximum HP and MP, and the frequency of occasions in which he can unleash special attacks is lowered. You will no longer have the crutch of bashing Heartless in the face with a giant rocking ship whenever you want. BUT…. Sora won’t be completely defenseless; he’ll have “new abilities exclusive to this harder difficulty mode”….Square was not specific beyond that. You’ll have to play for yourself to find out what they are. There’s another reason to use Critical Mode besides a tougher challenge. You’ll have the option of carrying over your collected Keyblades to a new game. We would imagine Square Enix is pleased with the stratospheric sales of Kingdom Hearts 3, released late January. There was one complication, however, they hadn’t accounted for: the existence of the third game ended up driving demand so high for the rest of the series, the compliation became impossible to find. Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far is a repackage of the two releases KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE. Today is the day! You probably didn’t need us to tell you this, but Kingdom Hearts 3 is at last a real product that you can buy and take home and play. The last time a proper numbered continuation to the series appeared, everyone owned a Razr phone and The WB was still a network. You could say it’s been a while. Thirteen years is a long time to wait for a sequel. The last numbered installment of Kingdom Hearts was two console generations ago. As one commenter on the Internet put it, “I was a child when I first started waiting for this game, and now I have a wife and a kid of my own.” Even after years of teasers and trailers, it still doesn’t feel real that we’re about to actually play Kingdom Hearts 3. But the store displays are going  up, the YouTube retrospective videos are growing in number, and the early reviews are mostly positive (except for Polygon’s). Let’s start off with the elephant in the room here: Kingdom Hearts 3 was leaked. An illicit Facebook auction was caught and taken down, but not before some sales took place. Somebody out there with connections to a disc pressing facility was able to sneak out 30 XBox One copies of the game, and was able to sell ten of them. What’s most sad about this is that director Tetsuya Nomura was so afraid of the possibility that he did not put the ending scenes on the disc. Instead they’ll be added to the game via download on launch day. Given that his fears have been validated, this means developers and publishers have one more excuse to sell physical media with incomplete content. making them much harder to play in twenty years. These days, when a big release hits a console, that console gets its own limited-edition model with a design themed around that game. Or, at the very least, a bundle package with the game inside. Kingdom Hearts 3 is no different. Though the third game in the series will also be available on XBox One, the series was exclusive to Playstation hardware for a long time….and Sony is rewarding that loyalty with a special Kingdom Hearts 3 themed 1 TB Playstation 4. It’s pretty, but the most peculiar thing about it is the fact that no characters from the series, Disney or Square-based, appear on the console. Instead it’s etched with a lot of curlicued hearts, keys and symbols, as well as a leather-like top surface pattern. You get a Dualshock 4 in the bundle too, etched with the same designs. Kingdom Hearts 3 is now less than two months away, and today Square took the covers off their new opening cinematic. This is what you’ll see every time you turn on the game, unless you push X repeatedly in an effort to get to your game as most people do. Hikaru Utada is back — she did the opening themes for both Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. But this time, she had assistance in the form of Skrillex. Yep, Skrillex is a big Kingdom Hearts fan and really wanted to get involved, and square didn’t see why they should stand in his way. That means this new theme (which is called “Face My Fears”) has more of an EDM flavor, as opposed to the Britney-era pop stylings of “Simple and Clean.” If you like the track enough to want a separate purchase, it’ll be out two weeks before the game, on January 18, 2019. Roughly three months to go until Kingdom Hearts 3. You might think there isn’t much left for the trailers to reveal — and there apparently isn’t, so what we have here is an extended look at a world we already know about, Kingdom of Corona…..aka the Tangled area. This is called the “LUCCA 2018 trailer” because it premiered at LUCCA Comics & games in Italy this weekend. Lucca from Chrono Trigger is conspicuously absent. That would be a sight to see, and it’s fully doable given that she’s 100% owned by Square, but this series is unfortunately for Final Fantasy crossovers only. Some of the scenes shown here you’ll recognize as being pulled directly from the Tangled movie itself. It’s a testament to how far video game graphics have come that we’re able to get this close to the actual 2010 film with real-time rendering chips.
