The writing was on the wall for the mascot platform genre in the 2000s, with the hangers-on pulling increasingly desperate moves to stay afloat. Typically, this took the form of edgy, confrontational makeovers that turned the sunglasses-wearing animals with attitude into surly, dark alley emos. The less said about characters like Vexx, the better. Kao the Kangaroo was introduced in 2000, in the midst of this chaos, and managed to win an audience the old-fashioned way. The smile never left his face and there was never a print ad showing him scowling next to a body-cast-wearing Crash Bandicoot knockoff in the hospital (although I’m too lazy to Google Kao, so one could exist). Point is, Kao’s games have stood the test of time better than most efforts from that era, and to prove it, they live today in the form of the Kao the Kangaroo Complete Kaollection.
