Rumors that something called “Persona 5 R” was on the way have been confirmed. Atlus uploaded a short teaser to YouTube this morning….30 seconds in length, and revealing its existence. And its existence was about it. A date of March 2019 is mentioned at the end, but according to Atlus, this is simply when more of the game will be revealed, not the date of its release. Despite its most recent release being in 2016, it’s been a visible 2018 for the Persona series, culminating with the surprise reveal of Joker, the main character of Persona 5, as a DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Many fans took this to mean a Switch port of Persona 5 is a full possibility, and that Persona 5 R was that port. Well……this teaser pretty explicitly opens with the Playstation logo. Idea Factory has published a new trailer for their upcoming JRPG Death end re;Quest, due out early 2019. It shows off two previously unrevealed battle tactics players will have at their disposal. But before we discuss anything, you need to know the backstory: Arata Mizunashi is a video game programmer whose friend Shina seems to have disappeared entirely into a virtual reality game, World’s Odyssey. The only way to save her is to dive into the game itself, where they’ll have to beat the game together….a formidable task, as only 1% of all players have successfully made it to the end. Good thing Arata knows how to hack. Each member of his team will carry unique skills called “Bug Skills.” This means they’ll be able to exploit bugs in World’s Odyssey to gain temporary special abilities, using them to unlock areas and reach hard-to-reach places. Dragon Quest XI is out next week! It’s always an event when a Dragon Quest game comes out in Japan, but never quite so much here. We in the West have long been a gaming culture addicted to innovation and pushing limits, and thus a deliberately oldschool series of RPGs that’s barely changed since the mid-80s has never truly caught on. Today was the day the embargo was lifted on reviews for Dragon Quest XI, and how the reviewers felt toward the game depended on their individual tastes. Jeffrey Parkin of Polygon was thoroughly bored with it. calling it “limited and fairly shallow” and remarking “its length raises a comparison between quantity and quality. Legrand Legacy, the JRPG from developer SemiSoft, has been fully funded on Kickstarter, with the Indie game getting the £40,000 it needed in order to complete its campaign; it had just three days left in order to reach its goal. The Kickstarter campaign came just two months after the original campaign failed to reach the funding required to be successful, even after SemiSoft offered increased incentives to potential backers.
