I first noticed Carrie Stevens, the Playboy Playmate/model/actress/businesswoman/rock music historian, on the Internet Movie Database. I was captivated by her beauty, especially her eyes. I knew that someday she would make for an interesting interview subject. When I ordered her autograph, I knew I had to contact her for an interview, and we spoke on July 5th. A great beauty, Ms. Stevens is so much more than her looks, though. We all love animation here, but I don’t think any of us, writer or reader, love animation as much as my next interview subject. John Canemaker is both an animator and an animation historian. As an author and documentary filmmaker, he’s written extensively about animation powerhouses like Disney and Warner Brothers. As an animator, his work has been seen on shows like Sesame Street and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, as well as at film festivals the world over. He’s even won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short, an honor accorded him for his short The Moon And The Son: An Imagined Conversation. Back when I wrote for RetroJunk, I had sent my next interview subject, Laurene Landon, a request for an interview, and even though she had initially declined it, I befriended her and her manager on Facebook. Her manager, Joe Williamson (who had also set up my interview last year with Mel Novak), and I discussed the possibility of an interview for Pop Geeks, and after several weeks of preparation, I spoke to Laurene on May 30th. Kimmy Robertson discusses her diverse career, from voicing beloved Disney characters to her role in Twin Peaks, and reflects on the joys of acting. My first exposure to Kimmy Robertson’s work came as a young Disney fan. In 1989, I saw Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, where Kimmy played Gloria Forrester, and that was followed by seeing The Little Mermaid and Beauty And The Beast in theaters. In the former, Kimmy voiced one of Ariel’s sisters, and in the latter, she voiced Fifi (often incorrectly called Babette in current merchandise), one of the many enchanted objects in The Beast’s castle. As I grew older, I saw her as Rose in The Last American Virgin, another movie I came to admire very much after having some initial worries about the picture. This next interview came about in a rather unusual, but cool, way. As a writer, I normally reach out to the people I want to interview. Sometimes I get a positive response. Other times, the person I want to interview is too busy. I took a look at Mel’s filmography, and if you’re looking for a heavy in your movie, Mr. Novak is a man to turn to. The daughter of the late actor Keefe Brasselle and the late Arlene DeMarco of vintage singing group The DeMarco Sisters, Rocky has worked in many diverse areas. B-movie fans will know her from her frequent collaborations with cult classic director Jim Wynorski. I was first introduced to my next interview subject when I visited a Blockbuster video store during a visit to my uncle’s house in 1996. We rented several movies that weekend, and one of them was Amazon Women On The Moon. A wild compilation of sketches, one that stood out was a sketch called “Roast Your Loved One”, where wakes were turned into roasts. The widow of Archie Hahn’s Harvey Pitnik was named Bernice, and she was played by Belinda Balaski. She got some great lines in that sketch. 15 years later, I befriended Belinda Balaski on Facebook and acquired her autograph. I knew that she had done a lot of work with Joe Dante, a very underrated director, and I saw that she was a gifted painter, too.
