If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, and you haven’t seen spoilers as to what happened, you really should look away now, you’ve been warned. At the end of the film, Thanos, who had all the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet, snapped his fingers and wiped out half the universe. This included 11 major characters who were alive by the end of the film, leaving the “major character” death count at 15. However, as I noted in my review of Infinity War, while the move was bold, we as fans know that a majority of these deaths have to be undone, especially since some of these characters are going to have sequels. In the internet-fueled world we live in now, there is nothing worse than having a major thing spoiled for you. NOTHING! In case you missed the Super Bowl last night (I hope you got it on DVR, it was a terrific game), one of the numerous trailers that appeared during the first quarter was for Marvel’s Infinity War Part 1. For those unfamiliar with comic book lore, the alien despot Thanos is seeking out all six Infinity Stones so he can install them on a gauntlet, which he will then put on his left hand and, through its power, become an unstoppable god. Since the first Avengers film hit in 2012, fans have known that Thanos was coming. He was brought in to be the culmination of three “Phases” worth of films, and he’s been teased in many of them. At the Marvel Studios Panel at San Diego Comic Con, many details were shown off for the highly anticipated Captain Marvel film. But two bits of information stood out above all. One, the antagonists would be the infamous Skrulls. And two, the film is set in the 90’s, long before the Avengers were even a spoken word. This raised many questions, and Kevin Feige was happen to answer most of them. First off, the Skrulls: “Captain Marvel will be our 21st film in the cinematic universe, and we’ve never seen the Skrulls. How come?” Kevin Feige told IGN following the panel at SDCC, “We thought it would be fun. There’s an entire section of our comics that deal with the Kree/Skrull war, and we haven’t tapped into that at all, and we thought that would be an amazing, huge part of the mythology to belong to Captain Marvel.” He is right on that part. Infinity War was in full display at San Diego Comic Con, and though a full trailer was not shown, those who attended the panel were able to see glimpses of what’s coming, including Thanos not wearing the armor he did in Guardians of the Galaxy or other cameo appearances. IGN talked with co-director Joe Russo who talked about the “journey” that Thanos is on: “He has a more casual approach in this film and it’s very philosophical for him. It’s part of his character definition. It’s a spiritual journey for him to collect the [Infinity] Stones and one with which he does not need armor. Once he starts acquiring the Stones he doesn’t require armor the same way he did when he was a warlord. It’s a very symbolic costume,” he said. At D23, and then at San Diego Comic Con, art and figures were shown off featuring the Black Order, the group of soldiers/generals that are loyal to Thanos, who is the star villain of Infinity War. The Black Order was actually created a few years ago during a comic run known as Infinity. And as such, they quite an impression on people, including Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, who noted at SDCC: “We get inspired by a lot of different material when we’re working on the movie. We pulled from both “Infinity” runs for this, and look, there are a scary bunch of characters who I happen to think, when I read the Infinity run, were super cool. We all know that the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is going to be massive. After all, this is the culmination of over a decade of work and dozens of films, but it may not be clear just how massive the film is going to be in terms of scenes. What we mean is that between the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, other Marvel characters, and the villains, there’s potential for a lot of characters to be on the screen at once. This seems to be confirmed by Scarlett Johannsen, who appeared on Stephen Colbert and noted something interesting: “Alright. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 was a massive hit in theaters, and it’s already confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is going to be made. However, it’s not in production yet, and won’t be for a while. Not because Director James Gunn doesn’t have ideas on what to do, but rather he needs to wait on Infinity War to be done in order to set the tone. Though we’ve known about it for a while, Infinity War will feature the Guardians of the Galaxy meeting the Avengers for one big, colossal, two-part film. However, what has not been made clear is how big a part the GOTG will have in the film. On one hand, they know about Thanos, and the Avengers don’t (yet), and some of the GOTG have big beefs with Thanos, so that’ll no doubt play a part in the film.
