HBO Pares Down Game Of Thrones Spinoff List
Remember when HBO announced they were developing FIVE separate spinoffs from Game of Thrones? Did that number seem a little excessive to you? Today we found out the reason, and the larger strategy behind the move. HBO’s intent was never to actually MAKE five GoT spinoffs…..just to pick the best of the five proposals. As Sturgeon’s Law says, 90% of everything is awful, and with a property as evergreen as Game of Thrones, you want to take every precaution to avoid spoiling the well. “The reason we did multiple scripts, in the development process, [we knew] out of five we’d be lucky to get one we’re excited about,” says HBO president Casey Bloys. The solitary script that kept its head during the massacre was the one by Jane Goldman. The four that didn’t make it were pitched by Bryan Cogman, Max Borenstein, Brian Helgeland, and Carly Wray respectively. George R.R. Martin himself had a hand in two of them — the one by Wray, and the one HBO picked. Goldman’s
