In a move that is becoming more and more common in online competitive multiplayer, Microsoft and The Coalition have added support for cross-play multiplayer to Gears of War 4. This gives players from both the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of the to play directly against each other for the first time. The new feature comes after a brief trial in December that saw positive results, prompting the developer to add a special cross-platform playlist into matchmaking. The trial demonstrated that no players on a specific platform had an advantage, with The Coalition stating that “Windows 10 and Xbox players had closely-matched results when comparing Average (kill to death ratio), score, and kills per match based on skill ratings.” The new playlist will only be available as a social gametype, with ranked matches remaining exclusive to their respective platforms. One of the problems in previous Gears of War games was that all players had to have a specific map either unlocked or downloaded in order to play it with their friends in Horde Mode. This caused many matches to not happen between friends because of it. However, at E3, Gears 4 director Rod Ferguson revealed that as long as the host players has the map in, all players will get it in Horde Mode. Microsoft has officially unveiled a brand new program for their Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms known as Play Anywhere. This new feature allows gamers who own digital copies of selected titles to play them on both the console and PC at no additional cost. According to Rod Fergusson at the Xbox E3 media briefing, this will include carrying over all progress across both platforms as well as sharing achievements and stats. Play Anywhere will also allow players to team up with those on either Xbox One or PC in co-operative game modes. One of the first games to support this new feature will be Gears of War 4, which is due to launch in October. The download gives players the chance to try out the multiplayer on the latest title and experience the new weapons on two distinctive maps. Xbox continued to roll out some new material for Gears of War 4 this week with a new multiplayer trailer that was released. You can check out the new video, which features new gameplay footage of the game’s Versus Multiplayer mode, in the player below. Today’s new patch of info includes the reveal of microtransactions that’ll allow players to customize the looks of their characters via collecting cards in the game. In an interview with Gamespot, director Rod Ferguson talked about these transactions: “I feel like that paradigm of cards is really clear to understand for collectibles, like the ability to collect things. We had weapon skins and character skins, so that idea of collecting cards is just easily understood,” Fergusson said.
