Last year, Free League announced a variant edition of their famed Lord of the Rings replaying game, The One Ring. Retitled The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, its main reason for existing is to be compatible with D&D 5th Edition. Everything you need to play the game will come in a lavishly illustrated 236-page core rulebook, including “six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.” The core compendium will be complemented by a separate scenario module entitled Shire Adventures. We are definitely getting a Walking Dead Universe tabletop RPG — the campaign from publisher Free League opened March 14 and, despite setting a time limit of less than a month, has already raked in over half a million dollars. The campaign closes in less than 48 hours, but there’s still time. The Walking Dead Universe is based on the AMC TV show and to make this project authentic, Free League worked with Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple and Head of AMC Networks Publishing Mike Zagari to pull in material from all established locales seen in the ten seasons of TWD. It also includes some new areas no one’s seen yet. The core rulebook will be a large one. They said they’d do it, and they did. Tabletop game publisher Free League has now released the game engine that powers most of their products for anyone to freely use. Named after Mutant: Year Zero, it doesn’t just drive that game but all of Free League’s most popular titles: Coriolis, Tales From the Loop, Forbidden Lands, ALIEN, Vaesen, Blade Runner RPG and others. The upcoming The Walking Dead Universe RPG will also use the Year Zero engine. Free League says plans for the release of the engine were formed in 2022 and they would have done this anyway, but the recent brouhaha with D&D and its owners Wizards of the Coast made it a bit more appropriate than it would have been. Plans to alter the OGL (open Gaming License) for D&D to give Wizards more control over it were made public earlier this year, and faced a gigantic backlash that forced Wizards to abandon those plans. Free League’s The One Ring, the tabletop RPG based on the writings of Tolkien, contains a vast world — but it’s about to get vaster, as the company introduces the second expansion to the game: Tales From The Lone-Lands. Now they had gone on far into the Lone-lands, where there were no people left, no inns, and the roads grew steadily worse. Not far ahead were dreary hills, rising higher and higher, dark with trees. January 2023 was probably the worst month in history for Dungeons & Dragons, when its owners Wizards of the Coast attempted to monkey with the OGL and faced massive, deafening backlash. Those plans have been now abandoned, but the effects are still being felt. Why, oh why, has Netflix never allowed an official Stranger Things tabletop RPG? Or if they do allow it, why has no one taken up that offer? It feels like the most no-brainer product tie-in in the world. The show is one giant advertisement for tabletop games. We imagine plenty of people have watched the show and then visited their local hobby shops for the first time. That’s a lot of money left on the table.
