This year marks the 10th anniversary of Dragon’s Dogma, the action RPG released by Capcom for PS3 and 360. It was one of the first attempts by a Japanese studio to mimic the Western RPG style — nameless protagonist, lots and lots of places to explore, realistic visuals, etc — and though it wasn’t a smash hit, it was successful enough for Capcom to think about a follow-up at some point. That day is today: introducing Dragon’s Dogma II. The original game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno, appeared in a YouTube livestream (archived below) to discuss his past as a developer, his history with the original game and his hopes for the new one. If you’ve been waiting for the chance to play Dragon’s Dogma for your game consoles, now you will get that chance. Capcom has released Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen today for consoles with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases. Players will be able to choose between nine different character classes and go on an adventure with three AI companions called Pawns. Dragon’s Dogma is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the form of a remastered edition known as Dark Arisen. Posts from the game’s official social media sites indicate that the title will arrive this fall across both consoles and will also see the game release on PC in Japan. The move will bring some hope to fans that a sequel might be in the works, or at least a possibility, as Capcom have obviously not abandoned the franchise. The original Dragon’s Dogma released in 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The action RPG was set in a fantasy world that mixed hack and slash gameplay with an open world. It received widespread critical acclaim from most critics and has a dedicated set of fans. While a sequel has often been requested, Capcom have only released Dragon’s Dogma Online over the past five years. This free-to-play title is exclusive to Japan and no Western localization has ever been announced.

Dragon’s Dogma was one of the surprise games of the last few years, as it raked up some impressive sales despite it not being a “big name title”. In an interview with PC Gamer, producer Minae Matsukawa stated that a sequel could indeed come, depending on the sales of the upcoming port of the original Dragon’s Dogma. “The Dragon’s Dogma development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel,” said Matsukawa.
