Ten years ago, a writer’s strike left most of Hollywood’s script writers twiddling their thumbs, including Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon. There was nothing to do but cheat on his wife some more, and he’d already done that, so he needed something fresh to occupy his time. That’s when he concocted a brilliant idea: make something for the web! Since anything could be published there, Joss was free to let his mind run wild. Why not a musical vlog focusing on an amateur villain in an age of superheroes? Before long, Joss had the script for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and not long after, he was actually shooting it, with Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion playing the roles. Despite being just a short miniseries with a self-contained story, Dr. Horrible and its characters are still referenced in geek culture to this day.
