Well, here we finally go. Nearly a year after everyone expected it to show up, the final half-season of Doom Patrol is finally, definitively scheduled for an October debut. Will we ever know why we had to wait so long? Probably not. But at least we finally have this trailer we’ve been waiting many months to receive.
Season four of Doom Patrol — its final season — was split up by Max to air in two parts. It was believed that those two parts would appear at the same time as its sister series Titans, since up to that point, they tended to premiere together. But when Titans finished its run last spring, the last six episodes of Doom Patrol did not appear alongside it.
It wasn’t that long ago that WB launched a streaming service devoted to nothing but DC superheroes, but it feels long, because such a niche service being thrown so many billions of dollars is definitely impossible now. But most of the shows that premiered there have managed to survive: Harley Quinn, Titans and (the subject of this article) Doom Patrol. We know when Harley’s coming back. But Doom Patrol has yet to finish its final season and no one knows when it’s going to get the chance.
It’s not exactly earth-shattering news if you’ve been following the headlines, but Warner Bros has just confirmed the fourth seasons of DC shows Doom Patrol and Titans will be the last of each. Though these shows have their fans — Doom Patrol especially — WB’s clean sweep of all disconnected DC programs in favor of a unified Gunnverse makes their continued existences impossible. Also, everything is getting cancelled at HBO Max anyway.
To survive, HBO Max needs content, but unfortunately, they’re currently under the stranglehold of a ruthless cost-cutter. Had all gone to plan, the streamer would be promoting the Thanksgiving release of Batgirl right about now. They don’t have that anymore. But they DO have Doom Patrol! The best superhero show on TV isn’t dead yet.
The first thing you need to know about the just-released trailer for Doom Patrol Season 4 is that it begins with a troupe of disembodied butts singing “Shipoopi” from The Music Man. And if that sounds even the slightest bit surprising to you, you haven’t seen enough of the show yet.
Good news for fans of former DC Universe programs that were dumped onto HBO Max — those programs seem to be holding up well against the competition. During today’s DC FanDome event, WB announced both Doom Patrol and Titans have been given fourth season renewals.
Apologies, folks — we were sent material for Doom Patrol Season 3 weeks ago, but I did not want to look at it until I had watched the show. My instincts aren’t always correct, but they were this time — Doom Patrol turns out to be an excellent series and, due to circumstances, the promo material for Season 3 definitely spoils where everyone ends up. If you yourself haven’t seen Doom Patrol yet, you really need to get on that, and you should watch them in order, avoiding anything about Season 3 until you reach that point.
What does HBO Max have planned for the upcoming months? More to the point, what does it have in store that a typical reader of this site would be interested in? Admittedly, not much….Season 3 of Doom Patrol is the standout attraction, and it comes right away in September. After that, pickings are slim. Lotta documentaries, some unappealing-looking reality shows, and the usual “drama about rich people fighting with each other” that HBO churns out every other week. But there’s also….
There are a lot of superhero shows out there, and it takes a lot to stand out. Trust us, DC’s Doom Patrol is the “a lot” we’re talking about.
Who’s the craziest bunch of superheroes in the DC Universe? That depends on which channel you’re tuned into. If you’re watching cable TV, it’s the Teen Titans. But if you’re streaming your shows, the Titans take their job seriously and the answer is the Doom Patrol — or at least it will be this February. The weirdest part? Both shows have Cyborg as a character.
