Netflix is about to get started on the next wave of their Marvel shows. Jessica Jones Season 02 debuts tomorrow. Luke Cage Season 02 is set to arrive June 22nd, Daredevil Season 03 is in production right now, Iron Fist Season 02 is soon to follow, and Punisher will film after that. If you’ve lost count, that’s five different Netflix/Marvel shows, but there’s one more that people are interested in, Defenders. Defenders was the culmination of the first four shows (Punisher came after) and showed the heroes teaming up to save New York.

One of the things that was apparent when Marvel and Netflix teamed up was that it had a very connected universe. And in fact, some of the Defenders showed up in each other series in one way or another. As a result of the success of Daredevil Season 02, The Punisher is getting his own series on Netflix that will release later this year. However, unlike the other Defenders series, this show won’t connect to them, which means it’s going to be a bit more focused on the character and not on some overarching story.

When you talk about the Marvel/Netflix collaborations, Iron Fist will be brought up. Easily the most polarizing of the collaborations, fans hated not only the portrayal of Danny Rand as Iron Fist, but also how the fights were incredibly lackluster. Especially when compared to Daredevil, which in many ways set the standard for brutal, and elegant, fight scenes. However, with Defenders just hours from launch, Iron Fist himself admits that things will be better in this series.

This is the culmination of everything Netflix and Marvel have been building since their partnership was revealed a few years ago.

When the Netflix/Marvel collaborations began, we were told from the outset that this would be a dark take on these characters. And sure enough, between Daredevil (and his numerous bloody fights and kills), Jessica Jones (and her…uh…scenes with Luke Cage in a bedroom) and Luke Cage (violence, implied discretions) and so far, we got that. But when Iron Fist came around, fans were put off by how light and bubbly Danny Rand was. He was very childish, and he showed very little growth throughout the series in many fans eyes.

In the Defenders trailer at SDCC, we notice something odd, one that is compounded by released clip, Matt Murdock is no longer Daredevil at the beginning of the series. If you recall, at the end of Daredevil Season 02, Matt failed to fully beat The Hand, Elektra got killed (but she’ll be back…), Foggy and Matt split up lawyer/firm wise, and Matt revealed himself to Karen. Apparently that was enough to make Matt hang up the suit. Which is something that Charlie Cox confirms in an interview with Cinemablend:
