So today I have to tell you Batman and Todd MacFarlane’s Spawn will be teaming up in a comic book, and even though I can’t hear any of you, I know what you’re all saying to me: “What, now? Why didn’t they do that in the 90s?” The answer is, they DID do it in the 90s. They’re just doing it again. Batman and Spawn already met in BATMAN/SPAWN #1 back in 1994, a book that MacFarlane produced with none other than Frank Miller for maximum 90s tude. Today Miller either won’t pick up the phone or he’s too busy doodling something incomprehensible and misogynist on a napkin, so when MacFarlane wanted his superhero and DC’s finest to meet once more, he hired his friend Greg Capullo. According to executive producer Geoff Johns, they were aware of this fact months ago and tailored the show to have a definitive ending. Last we heard from WB about their plans for the DC Universe, they didn’t have any. The company is kind of a mess right now (as you might have heard) and though their ultimate goal is to unify the DCU in the same organized manner as the MCU, they can’t decide who’s going to be in charge of such an undertaking. It’s just as well, though. The current status of indecision is forcing WB to just stick with what works for the time being, which is better for them in the long run. James Gunn, for example, came up with some truly excellent takes on the DCU in The Suicide Squad and its TV spinoff Peacemaker. The first thing you need to know about the just-released trailer for Doom Patrol Season 4 is that it begins with a troupe of disembodied butts singing “Shipoopi” from The Music Man. And if that sounds even the slightest bit surprising to you, you haven’t seen enough of the show yet. And if you haven’t seen the show….SEE THE SHOW ALREADY. When Superman And Lois returns in 2023 to what’s left of The CW, you might notice one character looks and sounds a bit different. Jordan Elsass, who played Jonathan Kent in the first two seasons of the series, is departing voluntarily. The series has picked a replacement: Australian actor Michael Bishop. As for why Elsass is leaving the show, the official statement is the usual vague “personal reasons” boilerplate….but the actor opened up to his real motivation on, of all things, a Cameo to a fan. “It’s sad, it’s a real shame,” he’s quoted as saying. “I know that I was pumped for Season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100% priority. It’s pinnacle. It’s got to take precedence. You get the sense that if it wasn’t for bad news from Warner Bros, there would be no news from them at all. They’re delaying two of their movies again, Shazam: Fury Of The Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Shazam 2 was, before today, scheduled to come out this holiday season, but instead has been bumped to March 17, 2023. This, in turn, has bumped the Aquaman sequel intended for that day all the way into NEXT December — so no one will see it for eighteen months. That makes for a huge span of time between it and the first Aquaman movie. At this point Shazam has been all over the calendar: it’s been delayed, moved up and now moved back. With disaster-in-chief David Zaslav currently making bizarre decisions at WB including the deletion of a complete Batgirl film, people have asked why the heck he went for that one instead of The Flash. Last year the studio announced plans to film a Batgirl movie with Leslie Grace as the title character. Now their new, brilliant owners at Discovery have decided not to go through with that movie. But here’s the thing: the movie’s done. It’s on the shelf. They spent $70 million creating it. And now they have decided to do nothing with it. You might be thinking, how bad must this movie be? Allegedly that is not the reason Batgirl won’t see release. The reported reason from WB is a pretty irritating, cold-corporate rationale: Batgirl won’t be released because it was made specifically for HBO Max and Discovery wants DC movies to be exclusively big-budget, theatrical affairs. WB hasn’t always known what it’s doing with the DC universe, but one of the few times they got it right was Shazam. It was the inverse of the grimdark Snyder movies they were known for at the time: a family-oriented comedic romp about a kid who finds a way to become a superhero when shouting a magic word. He turns into a muscle-padded Zachary Levi but still has the mentality of his child self, leading to a lot of wacky moments. It’s been a long time since Warner Bros released the first Shazam movie, and there’s a major problem with that: its stars are all supposed to be kids. You can just pull a Stranger Things and pretend nothing happened, but that’s even harder here, as Billy Batson’s power lets him turn into a grown-up. Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods released its first teaser. The first film is an unexpected hit, making $366 million at the box office. The original Captain Marvel will return with Zachary Levi reprising the title role. All the kids and their heroic versions will return except for Michelle Borth, who plays Adult heroic Mary.
