Makoto Shinkai Retrospective Gallery Comes To LA November 19
Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai has rocketed to anime stardom in recent years thanks to being the director of Your Name and the films after it (like that one about the guy who turns into a chair). But his career actually stretches back farther than that, and a new one-day pop-up exhibit arranged by Crunchyroll will display the man’s full filmography. Shinkai actually started back in 2002 with the film “Voices of a Distant Star.” You’ll be able to get a close-up look at materials from this and all his other movies in the exhibit: initial proposals, early design sketches, storyboards, animation renderings, and final film materials. Next to the exhibit, the Academy Museum’s Ted Mann Theater will be playing an accompanying Makoto Shinkai film retrospective. At 10:30am Weathering with You will play, at 1:30pm a private screening of Suzume, and at 5:15pm Your Name will screen.
