Now that Spy x Family Code: White has opened in Japan, how long until we get it here? Not too long, according to Crunchyroll, who revealed today their global release plans for the feature film based on the hit Spy x Family TV series. The premise of Spy x Family, as I’ve explained before, is that the world’s top spy and the world’s top assassin are posing as a fake family — but both have different reasons, and neither is truly aware of the other’s profession. Their adopted daughter is — she has the power to read their thoughts — but keeps it all to herself. Compared to how heavy some anime can get, Spy x Family is refreshingly light and its characters are instantly lovable. In the feature film, Loid, Yor and Anya are taking a break from their hectic lives by vacationing in the snowy village of Friegis. Solo Leveling started running on Crunchyroll January 6. It’s the first Japanese anime based on a Korean manhwa (their version of manga). Up to this point we knew nothing of any plans for an English dub, but Crunchy revealed all today. The dub version of Solo Leveling will premiere its first episode January 20. Sung Jinwoo will be voiced by Aleks Le (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba), his sidekick Yoo Jinho will be voiced by Justin Briner (My Hero Academia), his sister Sung Jinah will be voiced by Rebecca Wang (Aether Gazer), the deadly S-rank hunter Cha Hae-in will be voiced by Michelle Rojas (Hell’s Paradise), Choi Jong-in will be played by Ian Sinclair (One Piece), Baek Yoonho will be voiced by Christopher R. Tomorrow marks the day something different comes to Crunchyroll, though you may not realize it at first glance. The new anime Solo Leveling premieres in just a few hours — the first Japanese animation based on a Korean manga (which they call “Manhwa” over there). Created by author Chugong, the world of Solo Leveling is one that has been transformed by a portal to another dimension. The anomaly gave certain people superhuman powers, who are now referred to as “Hunters” because they make their living venturing through dungeons, slaying monsters that threaten humanity. You’ve seen a shonen or two before, so you can probably guess the protagonist of this story wishes he was a good Hunter but is incredibly weak, UNTIL he discovers a unique ability only he can possess. We don’t suppose there was any doubt that the Jujutsu Kaisen anime would be continuing, but it was confirmed by studio MAPPA almost immediately after the last episode of Season 2 was released in Japan. Crunchyroll has announced the acquisition of the new anime feature Great Pretender Razbliuto, as well as a theatrical run for the film. The Great Pretender series centers around Makoto “Edamame” Edamura, a man who considers himself the greatest con man in Japan. This belief is challenged when he’s conned himself by Laurent Thierry, who believes HE is the greatest con man. They agree to a competition to prove who is better, setting off the series. The new movie, though, isn’t about either of those people…the main character is Dorothy, the one who recruited Laurent Thierry to the life of crime. The official description says “This time around, [Dorothy] has been defeated at her own game by the Shanghai Longu Bang and is thought to be dead, but she soon reemerges in a small seaside village. Crunchyroll has a packed lineup ready to go for the start of 2024. 25 shows are planned to debut in the next few weeks, and this isn’t counting the existing shows that will be continuing with new episodes. We’ve already told you about Solo Leveling, the adaption of the hit Korean manhwa coming January 6. But there’s also Metallic Rouge, the new sci-fi series from Carole & Tuesday director Motonobu Hori and Cowboy Bebop character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto. It’s about two partners who are tasked with tracking down a group of rogue androids who are in revolt against their government. The series is animated by Studio BONES and will premiere January 10. Then there’s the isekai Sasaki and Peeps, about a sad-sack middle-aged office drone who buys a bird from the pet store, only to find it’s actually a powerful mage that takes him to another world. The anime is based on the hit manhwa (Korea’s term for manga) by author Chugong. The next Crunchyroll Anime Awards will be held in Tokyo this coming March. The recipients of said awards will be chosen much like they were last year: over 100 figures from in and around the anime industry will choose nominees, and anime fans from around the world will vote on which ones win. The complete list of categories was revealed today, and it includes three new ones: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Slice of Life. Best Art Direction (New) – Art direction involves all things visual to create the look and feel of an anime. Color, design, and animation style are only some of the considerations, as the tiniest of details must be kept in mind so that a show feels like a cohesive and distinct work of art. Best Cinematography (New) –  Cinematography focuses on the composition of individual scenes, paying particular attention to the use of light and shadow, camera angles, depth of field, and scene transitions. Crunchyroll makes announces many acquisitions at Anime NYC 2023 Panel, including Tower of God Season 2, Dr. Stone Season 3 Part 2. Goblin Slayer II and more. Another Anime NYC is in the record books and Crunchyroll had a large presence there, as we predicted. But they also announced many acquisitions and confirmed a lot more during their industry panel. They sent us a full list of everything for our convenience and yours. Some of the titles on this list aren’t too surprising (of course there will be more One Piece). But there are some interesting trends. More manga webtoons are being adapted into anime these days…the new hit Tower of God started as one, and more adaptions are on the way: “Solo Leveling” is scheduled for next January and “True Beauty” will be simulcast later in 2024. Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai has rocketed to anime stardom in recent years thanks to being the director of Your Name and the films after it (like that one about the guy who turns into a chair). But his career actually stretches back farther than that, and a new one-day pop-up exhibit arranged by Crunchyroll will display the man’s full filmography. Shinkai actually started back in 2002 with the film “Voices of a Distant Star.” You’ll be able to get a close-up look at materials from this and all his other movies in the exhibit: initial proposals, early design sketches, storyboards, animation renderings, and final film materials.
