We Happy Few was one of 2019’s more exotic video game products, especially sitting among the AAA packaged-for-retail crowd. Set in an alternate 1960s England, its story of forced conformity mixed with RPG mechanics and first-person stealth made for a disorienting experience. But at least we can’t say there wasn’t anything new out there. How does such a game come about, anyway? Now’s your chance to find out. Compulsion Games, makers of We Happy Few, have put together a behind the scenes documentary on what was involved in bringing such an original game to life, convincing the industry to take a chance on a quirky idea, and just getting the thing finished on time and free of bugs. This doc, “The Cost Of Joy,” is forty minutes long, but worth the time spent. In We Happy Few’s latest expansion, the We All Fall Down DLC, players take on the role of Victoria Byng. We’re introduced as she finds herself starving and suffering from the withdrawal symptoms of the psychedelic drug, Joy. During this newfound lucidity, she realizes Wellington Wells is falling apart at the seams. Food supplies are dwindling rapidly and plague has found its way to multiple neighborhoods in the city. Victoria is sure she can convince her father, General Byng, that the citizens need to be freed from their drug-induced haze. With clear minds, everyone will be able to rally together to save Wellington Wells. If she can’t convince her father to help, to what lengths is Victoria willing to go in order to save and free the citizens?   The We All Fall Down DLC introduces rooftop traversal and strips away the survival elements of the main game. This shift in gameplay puts the focus on a fairly dark story. We All Fall Down dives right in to the action.

The team at Compulsion Games has been hard at work improving We Happy Few and is today launching a set of major optimizations called the Clockwork Update, which introduces a new tutorial area, improved encounters during conversations and quests, a visual overhaul in the village of Hamlyn, and more. You can check out the trailer for the Clockwork Update, as well as the patch notes, below. We Happy Few‘s developers have also addressed the disconnect between the intro and the beginning of the game by implementing a new shelter, which shows how Arthur got to where he is. Under The Hood Quest state system: Every encounter/quest in the game is now built using a new quest state system.  This system changes quest tracking from a scripting-based system to a code based system, where the game knows at all times exactly where you are in any given quest.  This makes it much simpler for us to create encounters, and also much more reliable.  We no longer need to have complicated scripts
