Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken parodies just about everything, but every now and then their targets have enough of a sense of humor that they partner with RC to produce officially licensed specials centered around their IPs. You can add Archie Comics to that list when what has been dubbed The Bleepin’ Robot Chicken Archie Comics Special runs next month.
Ever since digital comics became a thing, the comic book industry has been reluctant to fully embrace the medium, understandably worried about wounding their traditional print market and betraying the direct comic shop sellers they rely on. That’s why there is usually a delay between the time a 32-page issue comes out in print and the time it becomes available with on-demand subscription services like Comixology.
A lot of us grew up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch in some form. For some it was the comic books, for others it was the TV sitcom or one of her cartoon shows. Like Doctor Who, Sabrina never truly dies, she just regenerates into a new form and continues on. And the latest Teen Witch is Kiernan Shipka, cast in the starring role of Netflix’s Sabrina series.
Earlier in the year we reported that the team behind the CW’s campy-dark reinterpretation of Archie was working on a campy-dark reinterpretation of Sabrina. It would seem to be the logical next step, but what happened today caught us completely off-guard: Netflix snapped the show up instead.
Looks like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, one of America’s most iconic brujas, is getting her own TV show again. Those hoping for a nostalgia trip are in for a shock though — in sharp contrast to the carefree upbeat tone of the 90’s version (as well as the 60’s Filmation cartoon), this will be a scary, frightening horror show.
I was first introduced to Audrey Landers’ work via the 1985 film version of A Chorus Line, where she played Val and memorably performed the song “Dance Ten, Looks Three”. As I’m always learning more about the pop culture of the past, especially the 1980s, I came to discover more about Audrey, and I was impressed. She acts, she sings, she composes songs and she’s logged more miles of travel than most of her contemporaries. I spoke to her on May 2nd, and I hope you all enjoy getting to know this versatile talent.
Right now, Archie Comics’ most successful 32-page comic book is Sonic the Hedgehog. In print for over 22 years, it’s officially the longest-running and most successful comic based on a licensed outside property, and it’s one of the few comic books you can still find sold in supermarkets. Of course the company isn’t called “Sonic Comics,” which is likely the motive behind the dramatic reboots of late to make their flagship characters appeal to a wider, older audience. For the first time in his career, Archie is being forced to play catch-up.
