Despite not being able to make a full-on Hulk film since The Incredible Hulk helped kick off the MCU, that doesn’t mean the idea of it hasn’t changed things. In an interview with The Wrap, Kevin Feige noted to Humberto Gonzalez that a report he made caused Feige and director of Age of Ultron Joss Whedon to change the ending of the film. “You had the big scoop about us doing Planet Hulk,” Feige said. “It turned out to be accurate [but] at the time, it was not accurate because we didn’t have any plans to do it and Joss [Whedon] was doing Age of Ultron at that time. Joss Whedon is the man who brought us the first two Avengers films, both of which were incredibly well done films that shattered box office records. However, the second Avengers film, Age of Ultron, was more criticized than the original, and didn’t make as much either. It’s been well documented that Whedon didn’t have as much control as he had in the previous film. Apparently this really affected him after it was over. Sometimes films have an extended “Director’s Cut” that show the a longer movie with less studio butchering or interference. Either that or condensing the narrative for the sake of time and money. For Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was noted early on that there was  a lot of footage cut from the movie, along with an alternate ending. Some fans hoped that this would mean a Director’s Cut would follow for the film some time after the release. However, Marvel Studios has never released an extended Director’s Cut for any of its previous films. So ever since the release of Age of Ultron, and in a way a little before that, Joss Whedon has opened up about what it was like on set making this movie. He’s already admitted that it exhausted him, which is why he’s stepping back from making a third Avengers film, but it seems there was more to it than that. In the movie, there was a subplot with Thor that seemed to be kind of pointless in a way. Most movies (or at least the good ones in my opinion) are ones with layers. Yes, most people like action, but if the action is hollow with no connection to the characters, then what is it exactly? The opposite is also true though, if the character stories and connections are hollow, or baseless, or pointless, why should we care about them? Despite being hyped to infinity (is hype one of the stones?), and making a boatload of money its first weekend, many reviews (including mine, which you can read here) noted how the romance between Black Widow and Hulk seemed rather odd. Not just that it happened with very little buildup (remember, he almost killed her in Avengers, and she seemed to be destined for Hawkeye and also flirted with Cap), but that the conversations between them took them out of character. OK, so ever since the confirmation of Spider-Man being allowed to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the question was, “What movie would he appear in first?” Well, there were rumors he could be tacked on to Age of Ultron (later spurred on by a fake ending sequence), but later it was confirmed he would be in Civil War in some capacity. After a lot of waiting, a LOT of previews, trailers, teases, reveals, and more, Avengers: Age of Ultron has come out, and I have seen it. So, why review it now? Well, I feel this is a little better, as I can give a full-on spoiler filled review instead of trying to dance around the finer points. Also, this will help show why I gave this Age of Ultron review the score I did. It’s hard to believe it’s already been another Phase since the original Avengers came out (yes, I realize Ant-Man hasn’t come out, but it’s basically been a full Phase), and a lot has changed since then. In fact, if Age of Ultron had acted like nothing happened since the original Avengers, a LOT of opportunities would have been lost. Thankfully, it didn’t, and though there are some bumps, miscues, and a few unneeded moments, Age of Ultron does a really good job of keeping the Avengers magic alive, but also laying the groundwork for Phase 3. To no one’s surprise, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron topped the Box Office this weekend. Again, not a surprise, however, what was a surprise was that the sequel did not top its predecessor. Box Office results come courtesy of Rentrak. The original Avengers made roughly 207.7 million in its first weekend, while Age of Ultron roughly made 187.7. That’s a 20 million dollar drop. Now to be fair, this means that Avengers and Age of Ultron now hold the top two spots for best opening weekends ever (the previous No.2 was Iron Man 3 with $174 in its opening weekend), but this must come as a surprise to both fans and executives. Why? Well, numbers. Age of Ultron was calculated getting roughly $27 million on its Thursday midnight showings. Then it made a total of $84.46 million after its showings on Friday, which means on Saturday and Sunday (again, roughly because numbers are still coming in) they only made an estimated $103 million (about $57.2 million on Saturday and $45.9 million Sunday). So Avengers: Age of Ultron has officially come out, and as anyone who has seen the film will tell you, there are a lot of characters in the movie. From the Avengers, to the supporting characters, and so on, it’s a lot to take in and a lot to balance. Earlier in its filming, Idris Elba (who plays Heimdall and appears in Age of Ultron) noted that both he and Tom Hiddleston (aka Loki) would be in the film for a brief scene.
