Living on the West Coast means you’re often behind a lot of people in finding things out. Often I first learn about a thing through waking up in the morning and booting up social media and seeing everyone else’s reactions to something insane I don’t know about yet. It took me a few scrolls to piece together what happened while I was asleep THIS time, but eventually it dawned on me that Microsoft just announced it had purchased Activision Blizzard.
Blizzard Entertanment’s Overwatch certainly doesn’t need extra promotion. Whenever a new character is introduced, the fans do the promoting for Blizzard, creating thousands of fanarts and flooding the Internet with them in 24 hours. The co-op team shooter is ingeniously built with Internet culture in mind, introducing colorful characters while giving you JUST enough story to spin your imagination and create your own narratives.
In a post today on Battle.net, Blizzard Entertainment announced that the company is changing the longstanding name of its website, Battle.net, to something new. There will apparently be a transition away from Battle.net at some point.
Earlier this week during BlizzCon, Activision Blizzard officially announced the launch of Activision Blizzard Studios, a new film and TV studio division of Activision and Blizzard to develop original content based on the company’s video game franchises and intellectual property. Nick van Dyk, formerly of Disney, has been named the co-president of the studio, with another senior creative executive to be announced soon. Properties that the studio will be developing film and TV projects for include Skylanders, Diablo, Hearthstone, and StarCraft.
Activision Blizzard has revealed that they are to buy King Digital Entertainment, the creators of the hugely popular mobile game Candy Crush. The deal will be worth around $5.9 billion and give Activision Blizzard control of one of the most played games in the world, with the Candy Crush series regularly seeing more than half a billion active users every month.

Activision Blizzard, Inc. today announced that members of senior management, including Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Inc., will be giving a corporate presentation at its analyst day event on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from approximately 9:15am Pacific Time to 1:00pm Pacific Time.
