We need to talk about Nintendo’s scalper problem. There have been isolated incidents here and there, but nothing like what we’ve seen ever since Amiibos hit the market. Wave 1 of the Amiibo figures came to stores last November. At first everyone in the lineup was available, but then Wii Fit Trainer and Villager disappeared and were not restocked. It was discovered Nintendo produced a much smaller number of the Amiibos they figured would not be as popular, with the result that they have become a thousand times MORE popular now that barely anyone can have them. Knowledge of this fact has caused the playing field for Wave 2 to become heavily skewed in favor of scalpers. Huge revelations arrived this morning at 6 AM (Pacific time) when a new Nintendo Direct began streaming from the company HQ. To start things rolling, Iwata debuted the trailer for the latest in the Fire Emblem series, entitled “The Latest In The Fire Emblem Series.” No release date as of yet, but the same team behind Awakening will be producing. Iwata continued with revelations of puzzle games involving monsters: the eShop game “Pokemon Shuffle” and the previously Japan-only kiddie series “Puzzles and Dragons,” which looks like every Pokemon ripoff of the past 15 years, will be released here — and to sweeten the pot, Nintendo will be sticking in a variant of the game painted with Mario characters. There’s the way other video game companies release collectibles, and then there’s the way Nintendo does them. In Europe, the UK branch of Club Nintendo will be offering a limited-edition, ultra-rare New 3DS to those it deems worthy. They don’t mean those who respond to the offer the quickest, or even anything at random. They mean they’re going to hand-select a bunch of their regular customers and present them this 3DS. And yes, by New 3DS, they mean the latest model with the self-correcting 3D and the extra nub for camera controls. There have been rumors floating around that the Nintendo 3DS eShop is about to lose one of the most iconic games in Game Boy history, the original 1989 portable version of Tetris. On December 27, a representative from Nintendo’s UK branch confirmed it in a tweet: “The Game Boy version of Tetris on Nintendo #3DS will be removed from sale on Nintendo #eShop from 31/12/2014.” However….this only confirms the game will be disappearing in the UK. Every single report on the subject that can be gathered only mentions Europe, and releases and rights can be different in separate territories. Europe just got Donkey Kong Land in the eShop and the US is still waiting on it. The rights to Tetris currently rest with Ubisoft, and Nintendo (at least Nintendo of Europe) must have chosen not to re-license with them, letting 1989 Tetris expire at the end of 2014. Over the past few years Nintendo has gone through something of a difficult patch. The Wii, though incredibly successful, was seen as something of a novelty by many in the press and by supposed hardcore gamers who often looked down at it. Furthermore, their most recent console, the Wii U, has proven to be a flop thus far. This has led to calls by some radicals that Nintendo should perhaps forgo the hardware business that they have continued for so long and move solely into creating software for other consoles. At the PlayStation Experience event, Sony revealed that Shovel Knight is coming to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. Shovel Knight originally launched earlier this year in June on the Wii U, 3DS, and PC. The game will play similar to the other versions of the game, though there will be one difference. From November 21 to December 21, Nintendo will be hitting the road on a mall tour to promote its products. An interactive exhibit featuring several playable kiosks will be displayed across the country. Both versions of the new Super Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Skylanders: Trap Team, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Yoshi’s New Island and Sonic Boom will be among the offerings passersby can fiddle with. The tour will not include any games you can’t currently buy off the rack, so it’s not necessarily for hardcore fans as it is for casuals and families on the fence. But there is one element of the tour you might find interesting: an arcade-style Mario Kart 8 rig with cockpit seating for four. In 2011 a game was released for the 3DS called Cubic Ninja. Three years later, after the game has gone out of print and its development studio has folded, Cubic Ninja has now skyrocketed in value. Over the last few days its average price has gone from $3 to $40, with some copies being sold for as much as $500. This must be a really good game, right? Not exactly. More like it’s the one game that turned out to enable an exploit that would bypass Nintendo’s security features and allow any hacker to paste his homebrew into the firmware. This week a hacker did just that. 22 year old Jorden Rabet published his findings on the forums of the GBATemp website, announcing he had successfully cracked the 3DS, with the help of a “mystery game.” Later he edited his post and revealed it was Cubic Ninja. Pikmin 3 Animated Shorts Available Now

The Pikmin 3 20-minute shorts are now available for purchase, announced during Nintendo Direct today. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario and The Legend of Zelda franchises, showed off a Pikmin animation at the Tokyo International Film Festival this year, and now those shorts are available for purchase. The three shorts are available for a $5 USD package. You can get them on 3DS or the HD version on the Wii U, with no cross-over unfortunately.  In addition to this news, the Pikmin 3 demo will be available through the Nintendo eShop, with all progress made during the demo carrying over to the full game upon purchase.

Nintendo announced today that The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is coming to the 3DS in Spring 2015. Revealed during a Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, confirmed that the game would be made in a similar style to Ocarina of Time 3DS, which released in 2011. Iwata also promised they would “maintain the original level of challenge while keeping the game accessible for anyone.” The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask originally released in 2000 on the Nintendo 64. Many fans wanted the game to come to 3DS ever since Nintendo remade Ocarina of Time on 3DS. Mario Kart 8 Has Sold Almost 3.5 Million Copies In First Four Months

Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 has sold 3.49 million copies in its first four months. The publisher revealed the news when they released their results for the last financial year. This figure includes downloaded and bundled copies, giving an attach rate at 47.8 percent, which is up from 42 percent from Nintendo’s first quarter financial report. Nintendo also revealed in their financials that they sold 610,000 Wii U consoles in the last quarter, and shipped 1.27 million 3DS/2DS consoles, bringing the total to 2.09 million this year. They still project to sell 3.6 million Wii U consoles and 12 million 3DS/2DS consoles. As for software, Nintendo revealed that Pokémon X and Y sold 13.29 million units, Tomodachi Life sold 3.12 million units, and Super Smash Bros. 3DS sold 3.22 million units. Overall, Nintendo posted revenue of ¥9.255 billion ($85.7 million) for the second quarter. For more on Nintendo’s second quarter report, click here.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U Release Date Announced

Nintendo has announced that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be released on November 21 in North America, December 5 in Europe, and December 6 in Australia.  Additionally, Nintendo announced that the GameCube controller adapter, which was announced in late May, will launch alongside Super Smash Bros. Wii U. You can purchase the controller separately for $19.99, or you can purchase a bundle that comes with both the game and the controller for $99.99. Nintendo also revealed Super Smash Bros. 3DS has been successful, announcing that the game has sold over 2.8 million units worldwide. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS just recently released in North America and Europe, and it has been available since September in Japan.  We’ll have more on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U soon, but for now you can pre-order it here.
