SDCC 2018: Joss Whedon To Re-Buff Buffy

It’s been rumored for a long time — Fox’s reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer — but we’ve never heard anything about the project actually going forward. That’s because, until now, none of the Buffy re-Buffs have had the blessing of creator Joss Whedon, and have thus died on the vine. Until now. This could be the Chosen One, folks….this could be the Slayer. Whedon himself took to the stage at Comic-Con today and said HE was working on a new Buffy series. It will be a new continuity with a new cast. “Based on recent remake trends, I’m guessing the character is going to be exactly the same only black,” you might say. And um….yeah, that’s what Joss confirmed. He also said he was hiring on Monica Owusu-Breen as showrunner, who is a seasoned veteran of this kind of show — she wrote for Agents of SHIELD and Charmed, and was a major player behind NBC’s Midnight Texas, though we doubt she puts that last part on her resume.

For a while, all evidence seemed to point to FX cancelling Legion after its second season (currently running right now). It’s getting abysmal ratings numbers, but the last thing we heard from the cable channel was that they were adding another episode onto the Season 2 order. Fans didn’t interpret this as a good thing — more like “they must have been given that extra episode to wrap up the series.” That was the prevailing theory, but it was thankfully wrong. FX confirmed today the X-Men spinoff will return with more episodes in 2019. Now enthusiasts can turn their attention to more important theories — like just what the heck is going on in the show itself. “Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season,” FX’s original programming president Eric Schrier said in a public statement. “We are incredibly proud of Noah Hawley’s achievement and are honored to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television

The release of Deadpool 2 is now precisely one month away — May 18. That means we get one more trailer, but according to the title and thumbnail, today’s two and a half minute sneak peek is the very last one. Nearly a year ago, we (along with many other websites, don’t just blame us) reported on the possible existence of a pilot called “Operation: Aliens.” The proposed animated series would have ran on Fox Kids during the 1992-93 season, but it was cancelled, leading to a lot of offbeat “Aliens” merchandise suddenly appearing in 1993, some of it bearing the “Operation: Aliens” logo. Unfortunately….some recent testimonials have come to light from people who were working in the industry at the time, and it turns out none of it is true. An Aliens cartoon was never actually planned. An amateur journalist who goes by “JimboX” emailed Margaret Loesch, head of Fox Kids during the early 90s, to see if she would remember this cartoon. Fox announced today it will be delaying some of its planned X-Men-related feature films. No worries — Deadpool 2 is still coming out on time. It’s what comes after that isn’t ready yet. Originally, X-Men: Dark Phoenix was scheduled to open November 2, 2018. After today’s decision, it’s been pushed back to February 14, 2019. Reportedly this is because the film needs reshoots, and the all-star cast (with the likes of Jennifer Lawrence) isn’t available until August at the earliest. Fox is also delaying their super-horror movie The New Mutants into August 2, 2019. The picture has now been hit with a second delay. Originally scheduled for next month, it was moved to February 2019 — but Dark Phoenix now has that spot, and you don’t mess with her, so it’s been pushed all the way into the summer after next. No matter how rainy it is outside or how much work you get swamped with, a day that starts out with a new Deadpool 2 trailer is always a good day. We get to see a lot more of the picture this time and learn a lot more about the plot….enough that I feel I need to forget everything I wrote here as soon as I hit “Publish.” It turns out Cable has come from the future to execute someone who’s just a boy in Deadpool’s time — someone that’s so far been referred to as “that kid” and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s his given moniker in the movie itself. Eventually, rewatching all 90s shows will become a two-pronged experience: the original seasons, and then the Trump-era revival season with lots of in-the-moment “fake news” jokes. With all the revivals we’ve seen lately, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that 20th Century Fox wants to bring back Buffy badly. What IS surprising is the restraint they’re showing in regards to that decision. Fox TV chairman Gary Newman addressed a crowd at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem and admitted out of all the properties they own and haven’t resurrected already, “Buffy” is the name that’s most often brought up. Rumors of Brian Michael Bendis’s departure from Marvel have been greatly exaggerated! Sure, he’s not working with the comics anymore, but he’s still attached to the characters film-wise. (And given the state of the DC Cinematic Universe compared to Marvel’s, why wouldn’t he take that option?) Deadline reports that the hairless man is currently working on a “secret movie project” set in the X-Men universe, currently referred to by the code name 143. As for what that could mean, THR claims to have a source that says the proposed flick revolves around Kitty Pryde, and issue 143 of The Uncanny X-Men also revolved around Kitty Pryde. The plot of that issue was Kitty trapped alone in the X-Mansion with a fierce alien creature. Is that the story BMB wants to commit to film? Time will tell if Fox wants a mutant-powered Alien knockoff (they have the original, don’t they?) May of 2018 is going to be absolutely brutal on the wallets of moviegoers. Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, AND Deadpool 2 all come out within those 31 days. To make matters more absurd, those three tentpoles are all generally produced by the same company, though Deadpool 2 is an arguable exception (for now). Speaking of the Merc with a Mouth, the first “real” trailer for his movie was released this morning, and as expected, it’s both hilarious and excellent. Not much actual footage from this movie has been released so far — this trailer contains some of the first brief clips anyone has ever seen. We got Negasonic Teenage Warhead, we got Deadpool’s blind roomie, we got a half-second of Love Interest winking, but the most important part of this is what took up the trailer’s majority: the Merc promised us Cable in the sequel, and today he delivered. Though his armor is a work in progress. Deadpool 2 will be released May 18, 2018.

Alien 5, oh Alien 5….how I wish that you were alive. Bringing thrills and bringing fun, showing Ridley how it’s done. Sigourney Weaver back again, Newt a living next of kin. How I wish this art was real, Covenant had no appeal. Director Neill Blomkamp never got to make his proposed Alien 5 movie, mainly due to Ridley Scott’s current stranglehold on the property. He released drawings online of a Weyland-Yutani warehouse, a grown-up Newt, and Ellen Ripley in some kind of bio-organic weaponized Alien suit. The story told itself and sounded amazing. But while he did attract the attention of Fox for a while, the movie just couldn’t happen. Blomkamp had to dump some of his ideas in a series of short films he released earlier this year, one starring Sigourney. Today the director published two previously unseen pieces of art from the proposal. One is another look at the warehouse: We haven’t gotten to see that ship before. Wonder how it would have played in the movie plot.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has followed through on his desire to sell off the film and TV studios owned by News Corporation, and the Walt Disney Company has picked them up. James Cameron has made some boastful comments of late as to plans for two movie brands he helped shape into being: Terminator and Avatar. Apparently he wants to make four or five sequels set in the land of the blue giants, aka Pandora…but realistically, can he promise that many this far away from making just one?
