SyFy Is Making A Horror Movie Starring The Banana Splits
If the kerbillion sequels to that one movie about a tornado full of sharks didn’t make it clear, SyFy Channel is devoted to making cheesy B-movies, the more outrageous the better. And while they’ve been coasting on the success of Sharknado with random “shark–insert thing here” knockoffs, this time they’ve come up with a truly novel idea: a horror slasher starring Sid & Marty Krofft characters.
Sid and Marty Krofft dominated Saturday Morning TV in the 70s, and the majority of their output was trippy psychedelic TV programs starring unsettling puppets. The shows are truly bizarre to watch today, and even a bit creepy….hence the inspiration. SyFy’s “The Banana Splits Movie” is about the Banana Splits…as murderers.
We wouldn’t call this product completely original — the way it’s shot and staged bares more than a passing resemblance to a certain video game about animatronic animals that come alive at night. But since Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights At Freddy’s movie has hit some snags in development, SyFy was more than happy to pick up the ball and run with it. And if they could use an actual license, that’s more the better.
The clothing and hairstyles used imply this movie takes place in the 70s, during the heyday of Krofft TV. Nothing lasts forever, and when the Banana Splits hear that their show is about to be cancelled, they fight back by targeting the cast and crew with their oversized instruments of doom. No one splits up the Splits, or they’ll split YOU!
The Banana Splits Movie will air on SyFy later this year, followed by an official Blu-Ray and DVD release.
