Super Sema Holiday Special Set For December 10
Earlier this year YouTube premiered Super Sema, produced by the Nairobi-based children’s edutainment media and technology startup Kukua, on its Originals channel. What’s a Sema, you ask? It’s Sema herself — a young girl who runs a secret laboratory with her twin brother. They use their discoveries not just to improve the quality of life in Dunia, the city they live in, but to defend it from the evil schemes of a robotic villain. The series takes place in a futuristic version of Africa (which is where the show was made).
The entire season already debuted last spring, but there was also a holiday special in the works — and it premieres in two days. Dunia is one of those universes where Christmas doesn’t exist but something very similar to it does: the Day of Dreams. It’s described as “a time when everyone comes together to celebrate their hopes and dreams.” Sema’s dream is for snow, but it never snows in Dunia. Maybe she can make it happen through her mastery of technology, but is that a good idea? Meanwhile, Tobor (the robot we just mentioned) has plans for ruining the Day of Dreams.
Super Sema was written by four-time BAFTA winner Claudia Lloyd (Charlie & Lola, Mr. Bean, Tinga Tinga Tales) and directed by Lynne Southerland, the first female African-American director for Disney (Mulan II). The Super Sema holiday special will go live Friday, December 10, on the Youtube Originals channel around 9 AM Pacific / 12 PM Eastern.
