Super Nintendo World Opens In LA February 17
You know what happens February 17? The final season of Animaniacs on Hulu! But also, on the same day, Universal Studios Hollywood will open the American version of Super Nintendo World, the planet’s first — er, second Nintendo theme park. The original opened in Japan after several pandemic-related delays.
But our version is nearly ready to launch. Ethan Shanfield of Variety was invited to give the park a tour. Shiggy himself was involved in the design of Super Nintendo World and aimed to make the whole thing as playable as a video game. Visitors will be given a strap for their arms called the Power-Up Band that allows them to interact with objects around the park — for example, smacking a question mark block will earn them coins.
Shanfield reports that there are four main games to be played in the park’s main area. “In one game, the player must hit a POW block, causing a spinning Koopa shell to fly up a warp pipe at the right time. In another, they must disable a bunch of alarms before they go off, waking a snoozing Piranha Plant.” Ultimately, if you can beat all four, you’ll gain access to a boss fight against Bowser Jr. where you will be projected as a silhouette on a large LED screen. Beat him, and you’ll win a golden mushroom you can take home.
The centerpiece is “Bowser’s Challenge,” an interactive Mario Kart themed ride that goes around a real track, but is enhanced with augmented reality glasses. And it wouldn’t be a theme park without a place to eat and a place to lose more money (a gift shop). SNW has that covered with the Toadstool Cafe and the 1-Up Factory respectively.
Super Nintendo World will open In Universal Studios Hollywood February 17. Let’s-a go!
