Super Mario Bros Movie: Final Trailer
As Mario creator Shigeru Miyomoto explained when he appeared onscreen to introduce the final Super Mario Bros Movie trailer, he picked March 10 to debut the thing because “Mar 10” looks like “MARIO” if you squish it together. This isn’t exactly a new revelation; Nintendo has been trying to make “Mario Day” a thing for some time, discounting Mario-themed products on March 10 or introducing / announcing new ones on that day. This year, it was the trailer.
Also, today is March 9, not March 10. Shiggy explained it’s March 10 SOMEWHERE in the world right now and they wanted to be all-encompassing.
Joining Shigeru were all the actors in the film, together in one place (though it’s unclear if they were REALLY in one place or green-screened in pieces). Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Chris Pratt as Mario appeared on one screen and made up some playful banter, while Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach and Jack Black as Bowser appeared separately after them. The film’s directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic also made an appearance after the trailer played, explaining the thought process behind the Rainbow Road kart sequence that has appeared in most of the trailers (including this one).
As for the trailer itself, not much was learned that was new. A Luma from Super Mario Galaxy showed up, and while that was INTENDED to be fresh information, the presence of Luma was already revealed via a set of Happy Meal toys that were released last month. It’s worth watching anyway.
The Super Mario Bros Movie premieres in theaters April 5 — NOT April 7 as was previously reported! They moved it up two days.
