Square About To Announce New Tomb Raider Game
Sounds like Square Enix is about ready to reveal the next game in the Tomb Raider series. The company sent out a tweet this morning pre-announcing their announcement, which from the sounds of things we may not actually get immediately. The tweet was an image composed entirely of text, so rather than embed it, we’ve reposted the statement….
Square Enix is excited to share some big news with you next year. Honestly, we wish we could share it with you now, but we’re taking a new approach this time.
A new Tomb Raider game is coming.
Driven by our goal of putting our fans first, we want you to know that it won’t be very long between the official reveal and when you can play.
Our journey together will begin with a major event in 2018. We simply can’t wait to take you on Lara Croft’s defining adventure.
Square has released two mainline Tomb Raider games ever since the property became theirs (in addition to a few spinoffs). We knew the previous two were coming long before we got to play them, and we’ve known a third is on the way ever since 2016, when a careless employee left his laptop open and a document discussing “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” was displayed on it. Square has waited quite a while to officially reveal that game, choosing instead to reheat Rise of the Tomb Raider in greater and greater resolutions.
As they said, it’s a new strategy: hold the cards close until the new game is ready. We’re betting the “major event” Square is waiting for is the release of the new Tomb Raider movie this March. Once we get close to that film’s debut date, we may start seeing game trailers.
