Sony: ‘We Will Continue to Support the PS3’
While the PlayStation 4 is Sony’s current-gen console and selling in the millions, they’re not ready to abandon the PlayStation 3 just yet. Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Scott Rohde, head of Sony Worldwide Studio America product development, stated that Sony will continue to support the PS3.
“People are still buying PS3s. All the different parts of the world just adopt new technology at different rates. We don’t know how long the PS3 will last. We don’t know how long it will be compared to the PS2. The PS2 lasted very deep into the PS3 life cycle. There was a broad price difference between PS3 launch and PS2 end of life. We don’t know where all this is going to, but we will continue to support the PS3 through first- and third-parties as long as there is a good business there for us,” Rohde said.
Third party support is indeed still strong for the PS3, games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny, Battlefield Hardline and Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for the PS3 as well as the PS4. Meanwhile, Sony is releasing LittleBigPlanet 3 for the PS3 this fall. Sony has previously stated that the PS3 will have a ten-year life cycle. We are currently in year eight.
