Sony Pictures Picks Up Astro For Distribution
Yesterday we wrote a newspost on the upcoming Cannes debut of Astro, a new sci-fi thriller from creators Asif Akbar and Bernard Selling. Today we’re pleased to report a new, much wider distribution deal has been made, and that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be releasing the movie on DVD this June — one month earlier than its previous deal with eOne and ITN Distribution, which was for July!
You know the plot of the Alien movies — basically that a giant corporation wants to capture an alien creature for study, oblivious to the fact that said creature would obliterate mankind. What if the corporation’s mission was successful? That’s the situation Astro explores. According to the official description, the story involves “a billionaire’s private space exploration program returning to Earth with an abducted extraterrestrial from a newly discovered alien planet.” Trouble comes with it.
Akbar and Selling have big plans for Astro, hoping to turn it into a series. They’re launching a line of Astro books around the same time as the release of the movie, and they’d like to do more. “We are excited to create and introduce a new modern day science-fiction franchise to the world”, says Akbar.
Astro stars Louis Mandylor, Max Wasa, Omi Vaidya, Luke G. Crosby, Orson Chaplin, Gianni Capaldi, Spice Williams-Crosby, Courtney Akbar, Christopher Showerman and Michael Pare. It premieres at Cannes this month, followed by its DVD release through Sony Pictures. Look out for it June 5!
