SOMA: New E3 Trailer Raises the Creepiness Factor
About two weeks ago, Frictional Games announced the details and released a new, long-awaited launch trailer for the upcoming, new, first-person survival horror game SOMA. The video looked certainly creepy and unsettling. Now, Frictional Games has released the E3 trailer for the game ahead of next week’s convention, where SOMA will be on display and playable for the first time.
The latest trailer definitely looks to up the creepiness and terror factor for the upcoming sci-fi horror game, which is being developed by the creators of the Amnesia and Penumbra series. The story is set in what appears to be an underwater facility called PATHOS-2. Communications on the facility have gone dark, and key personnel are missing or have been declared dead in the preceding weeks. The machines in the facility are starting to act strange, almost like they are human. The voice-over narration from the new trailer almost gives the sense that perhaps the main protagonist is also “dead,” or rather a robot who has taken on the personality of a dead crew member of the PATHOS-2. It looks like the game will definitely push the mystery factor, and the new trailer definitely raises the potential intrigue level for the game.
There are some screenshots and images for the game (like the one above), which show that the main player character appears to have human hands and arms. However, one wonders if this could be some sort of red herring or misdirection for the story. Even the trailer has dialogue that says, “You know what sucks about dying? The crash. Everything up till now. You guys. Everything…has made my life so much more…real. I’ve never been more excited to be alive. All that hope…wasted.” Is it the main protagonist referencing having died, or another crew member?
SOMA is due out on September 22. The game will be available exclusively for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. The new SOMA E3 trailer is available in the player below.
