Solo Leveling Premieres On Crunchyroll January 6

It’s not often that Japan adapts an anime from a KOREAN comic, but that’s what’s happening with Solo Leveling, the series Crunchyroll has announced for its service next month. The anime is based on the hit manhwa (Korea’s term for manga) by author Chugong.

In the world of Solo Leveling, the world has been transformed by a portal to another dimension that opened a decade ago. It gave certain people superhuman powers, people that are now called “Hunters” because they make their living hunting in dungeons, slaying monsters that threaten humanity.

You probably know where this is going, so I will confirm that yes, the protagonist of this story wishes he was a good Hunter but is incredibly weak, UNTIL he discovers a unique ability only he can possess. It’s the ability to “level up,” which means he can increase his power through fighting experience, just like in a video game. Sung Jinwoo will just keep getting more powerful until he’s the envy of the world — what a lucky break! (If he’s not careful he’ll become Saitama from One Punch Man and just walk around bored with the whole thing.)

“At Crunchyroll, we are always looking for innovative ways to connect our audience with captivating stories from around the world,” says Asa Suehira, Chief Content Officer at Crunchyroll. “Solo Leveling is a groundbreaking series that has captured the imagination of fans globally, and we are thrilled to be part of the journey to bring this extraordinary manhwa to life as an anime. Our collaboration with Aniplex symbolizes our commitment to delivering high-quality, diverse content that resonates with our viewers.”
