Schwarzenegger Gets His Own Show: FUBAR
There are certain actors that, for some reason, won’t touch the TV business, regarding themselves as movie actors EXCLUSIVELY. For example, Nic Cage will star in any movie that pays his bills, but he won’t go near any TV show, forcing Disney to find some preteen to base the National Treasure TV series around.
For the majority of his career, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been one of the prime examples of the “too big for TV” actor. That kind of phenomenon, though, is becoming less common with the rise of “prestige TV” and streaming shows that look and feel identical to feature films. It was apparently enough to break the abstinence from television that Arnold has practiced since the late 70s. Netflix just announced the first TV show with Schwarzenegger in it, FUBAR.
A statement was released from Arnold himself, which we’ve modified to fit his accent: “Evryweah I go, peopoh ask me when I’m going to do anotha big action comadee like True Lies. Weah, heah it is. FUBAH will kich yoh ash and make yoh lahff — and not just foh too auhas. You get a hoh seasan.”
The series is described as an action comedy, which is not surprising given the back half of Arnold’s career consists solely of such things. He was the king of the Macho Tough Guy Movie back when Macho Tough Guy Movies ruled the box office. As the 80s turned into the 90s, moviegoers started taking him less seriously, and somewhere around Jingle All The Way he became a farce. Nothing to do at that point but become governor of California.
But it’s nice to see him again, even if all he plays these days is a parody of himself. FUBAR will premiere on Netflix May 25.
