Resident Evil Movies Will Never Stop Coming
This might be hard to believe, but director Paul W.S. Anderson says he’s done with the Resident Evil-branded series of movies. That franchise has been “finished” before but Paul has always returned to direct another one, bringing along his wife Milla Jovovich as the star. This time, however, he might mean it….because he’s confirmed to be working on another project, this one an adaption of the Monster Hunter games. No word if Milla will play a role.
That just leaves the German company Constantin Film, who currently holds the movie rights to the Resident Evil brand….and they aren’t so ready to give up. Six Resident Evil movies exist currently, and they believe they can make twelve. No, literally — they’ve announced they want to make SIX MORE movies using a different, rebooted storyline.
Martin Moszkowicz, the chairman of the Constantin Film board, confirmed at Cannes Film Festival last weekend that his studio is at work on a seventh film — or, technically, the first film of a new series. Why can’t they just let this poor cow go before it’s milked dry? Because the original six-ology brought in $1.2 billion with a B worldwide, that’s why. As with any other product, Constantin will only stop adapting Resident Evil for the big screen when it no longer turns a profit.
The reboot is early enough that it has no assigned stars or director. More details are expected in the coming months.
