PS Vita Firmwire 1.8 to add PSOne Classics support
Sony promised PSOne Classics support for Vita at E3, but until now we hadn’t heard much else. Today Sony have announced that the Vita’s next firmwire update (1.8) will introduce PSOne Classics support.
There’s no official release date for firmwire 1.8 yet, but it’s expected to hit the Vita sometime this summer.
The update will bring with it the awaited feature of PSOne Classics being playable on the Vita. However, not all PSOne Classics will work right away; Sony claim Vita support for Classics will only be seen in a few titles at a time, with the numbers gradually improving over time to include as many PSOne Classics as possible.
Luckily, one purchase of a PSOne title on the PlayStation Network will work across PS3, PS Vita and PSP, so your already-purchased PSOne games will work across all three eventually.

I don’t have a Vita so maybe someone can clear up an issue for me. I thought the Vita had no internal memory, so how is the update going to work? Download it on to the memory card? Seems crappy considering you have to pay extra for AND store your games/content on that as well.

Yep, the Vita has no internal memory so an external memory card (proprietary, too; no micro SD here) is needed.
It sucks, because the Vita is a good system with a lot of potential but the ‘hidden’ costs of memory cards and expensive games are really off-putting. :/
