Final Fantasy X (also known as Final Fantasy 10) was the first game in the Final Fantasy series to get a sequel. We can debate all day about the quality of said sequel, but the point is, that might not be the end of the story, if recent comments from the game’s producers are an indication.
Tetsuya Nomura, who was involved with X and is still at the studio, told the Japanese mag Famitsu that “If we are to make 10-3, we somehow have a synopsis written by [Final Fantasy 10 writer Kazushige Nojima]. It’s sleeping right now, but the plot itself does exist.”
Any chance of that plot outline being used? Motomu Toriyama, who directed FFX, said “The probability is not zero.” Thing is, though, they’re all occupied with a revival of a different sort: FF7 Remake. “We are not in a phase where we can talk about it, unless we have finished producing FF7 Remake,” Toriyama confirmed. With at least two more games to go before Cloud Strife’s tale is fully retold, it’s going to be a LONG time before anyone sees Wakka or Lulu again. But it is on the table!
And for those of you worried Square is just going to be recycling old characters from this point, they DID announce a fresh Final Fantasy installment last year…though the fact that they’re relying a lot more heavily on past successes speaks to the trouble they’re having making new ones.
