It’s natural to think that when a certain franchise gets made by a certain developer, that the tone and style will adapt to that company’s strengths. Look no further than Hyrule Warriors, which adapted the characters of The Legend of Zelda, but tied them into the gameplay of Dynasty Warriors. The results were successful, and was loved by many fans, despite some early concerns. When it was announced that there would be a Pokemon fighting game made by the creators of Tekken…fans were concerned about this as well. They felt it may just be a Tekken reskin with Pokemon characters instead of something truly unique. Well, the Producer of the game, Katsuhiro Harada, spoke with Famitsu and revealed that Pokken will be much more than just that.
“It’s a solid versus game, but at its core, it’s an action game for Pokémon fans,” he said. “The tech to make the game and the know how behind the massive amount of animations comes from our experience working on the games we’ve made before, but with the gameplay, we’ve set our sights on Pokémon fans.”
Harada also noted that this game would be for everyone, not just ones well versed in fighting games:
“People might think that because we’ve worked on games like Tekken and Soul Calibur or because of the name ‘Pokkén,’ that this game is made for established fighting game players, but I’d like to come straight out and say ‘no, it isn’t.’”
Pokken Tournament is supposed to be hitting Japanese arcades this month. Plans to release the game on Nintendo consoles will be revealed later on.
