Puzzle Bobble Now Available On Switch
Taito’s 1994 release Puzzle Bobble is now available in its original form for Nintendo Switch, as part of Hamster Co’s series of arcade releases for modern machines. It marks the first time Puzzle Bobble has been made available in the US under its original name. As the name suggests, the game is an offshoot of the 1986 arcade classic Bubble Bobble. The same characters serve as mascots, only their bubbles are used differently — by shooting them into a descending ceiling of colored bubbles. Matching three of the same color will send them tumbling — along with any other bubbles attached to them. Your goal is to clear the screen before the bubble wave gets too low. When Puzzle Bobble was localized for the US, Taito’s marketing department didn’t feel the original title was appealing enough and changed it to “Bust-A-Move,” a moniker its sequels kept in the States for over a decade. Europe received the game under its original title, and it’s this version that is now available on
Jump Force: New Story Trailer
Shonen Jump characters have appeared in their own video games before, but so many have never crossed over together, and never on such a grand scale. Bandai Namco’s Jump Force aims to be the ultimate brawling game for any fan of the popular long-running manga magazine. Any character you can think of is in here: Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Yugi, Gon and Hisoka from Hunter Hunter, Deku from My Hero Academia, Seiya and Shiryu from Saint Seiya…and as of today, four newly-revealed characters: Asta, from Black Clover. A brave but stubborn child wielding an unique anti-magic sword, who dreams of becoming the Wizard King. Trunks, from Dragon Ball. The son of Vegeta and Bulma, he possesses the incredible strength of his father, with the intelligence of his mother. Boa Hancock, from One Piece. The captain of the Kuja Pirates and the only female member of the Shichibukai. Renji Abarai, from Bleach. A highly talented swordsman. So why are all these manga heroes coming together? Who cares — is story ever crucial to the enjoyment
Uncharted Movie Faces Another Setback
Sony has been trying to get a movie based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series of video games off the ground for some time now. The series, an Indiana Jones riff starring a cocky treasure-seeking hero, would seem to be more adaptable as a motion picture than other video games which get this treatment. You’d think, at least. But the Uncharted movie does not have a single shot filmed to this day. The reason is that Sony just can’t seem to land on a director. David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, and Joe Carnahan have all been attached to direct the Uncharted movie at some point, and all bailed for other projects. The latest was Shawn Levy, who has Stranger Things, A Night At The Museum and Real Steel on his resume. It felt like this project was finally going forward. But think again…. Levy found a more attractive script and jumped ship, and ironically, the project he abandoned Uncharted for is also video game related: Free Guy, a comedy
There May Be Hope For Daredevil Yet
A glimmer of hope appeared for Daredevil, Luke Cage and the other Marvel Netflix shows today. The streaming giant threw the ban hammer down on most of these shows earlier this year, with their only hope being a pickup from parent company Disney — which we felt was unlikely. Disney+, the streaming service the conglomerate is preparing to launch late next year, is billed as a more family-oriented stream of entertainment….so the mature-themed Marvel shows, with their violence and swear words, wouldn’t really fit there. And the fact that Disney is preparing a few new Marvel shows to premiere on Disney+ — these tied more closely to the cinematic universe — would seem to seal Daredevil’s fate. But hold on. Kevin Meyer, head of Disney’s direct-to-consumer and international division, was interviewed by THR this week — mostly about Disney+ and the company’s future, but the subject did come up of their doomed shows over at Netflix. Would you consider reviving the Marvel shows that Netflix canceled? They are very high-quality
Hellboy Is Back With The Reboot’s First Trailer
Mike Mignola’s Hellboy had a couple of movies in the 2000s, back before the Superhero Movie Boom took over everything. Back then, only two-thirds of all movies were based on comic books, not 94 percent. Seems so long ago. For whatever reason, we never got a third flick with Ron Perlman in the big red suit. But David Harbour, aka Sheriff Hopper from Stranger Things, has taken up the charge as the lone demon on humanity’s side, kicking monsters around for the forces of good. For months, all we’ve known about the Hellboy reboot is that it was supposed to be “grittier” than the previous two movies. Nothing about this trailer suggests that. Director Neil Marshall has said over and over in interviews that this will be the “dark and serious” Hellboy movie, despite the fact that no one really wants that. They want the wisecracking, one-liner-slinging tough guy from the comics, not a miserable moper. This trailer represents either a big change of mind on Marshall’s side, or a
First Photos From Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin Surface
Entertainment Weekly has published the first photos from Disney’s upcoming Aladdin remake, set for May 24, 2019. Despite the movie being due in six months, no one knew what it’d look like until today. They’re dressed in different outfits, but they’re recognizable as streetwise Aladdin and the runaway Princess Jasmine, who hit it off instantly in the marketplace. Jafar actually has the lamp in this shot, meaning the first look at him we’re getting must be from near the end of the film. Wonder why. So who the heck is this? It’s a character invented for this adaption — Dalia, Jasmine’s handmaiden and best friend. If Jasmine had any friends she wouldn’t feel a need to escape the palace in the first place. Dalia is unnecessary and in danger of creating a time paradox. Aladdin has just exited the Cave of Wonders, one genie and carpet richer. He wants to use his first wish to become a prince and eliminate the class barrier separating him from his love. Genie is
Kingdom Hearts 3: Final Battle Trailer
Let’s start off with the elephant in the room here: Kingdom Hearts 3 was leaked. An illicit Facebook auction was caught and taken down, but not before some sales took place. Somebody out there with connections to a disc pressing facility was able to sneak out 30 XBox One copies of the game, and was able to sell ten of them. What’s most sad about this is that director Tetsuya Nomura was so afraid of the possibility that he did not put the ending scenes on the disc. Instead they’ll be added to the game via download on launch day. Given that his fears have been validated, this means developers and publishers have one more excuse to sell physical media with incomplete content. making them much harder to play in twenty years. In the words of Nomura: We’re aware that a small portion of Kingdom Hearts III has been circulating online before its official release. We are also aware as to how this all happened. We’re sorry to see this caused
The Dark Crystal Prequel Has A Star-Packed Lineup
The Jim Henson Company has been in a weird position ever since they sold the Muppet characters to Disney. The sale was only for Kermit and the cast of The Muppet Show, not any other series Henson ever created. Ever since, the company that bears Jim’s name has soldiered on, living off its less popular but still somewhat beloved properties. In his later years, Henson pushed the limits of puppetry in a frustrated effort to break the “kiddie” image the medium had. A lot of his projects during the 80s had dark themes. lots of shadows, monsters that weren’t funny, and mature storytelling. 1982’s The Dark Crystal was exhibit A for this phase of his life, and now it’s coming back. JHC launched a Dark Crystal comic book last year, but they want to do more. They’re now hard at work on a Dark Crystal TV series, set before the events of the movie. Netflix bought ten episodes, which will premiere on the streaming service eventually, probably next year. We’ve
Intensive Care Kicks Butt – Movie Review
For far too long Hollywood action films have been dominated by tough guys with jobs like The Substitute, The Transporter or The Specialist. Well now thanks to Jared Bentley, the writer-director of Intensive Care, we have a new profession to add to the list of butt-kicking action heroes, The Home Care Specialist. This fight-tastic thrill ride hits hard and pulls no punches when it comes to the stunts on display. Plot: Three low life criminals plan to rob an elderly woman’s home, but her caregiver turns out to be a former special ops agent with an agenda of her own. Despite the ominous inferences made by the brief plot synopsis above, Intensive Care is far from a gritty action film in its overall tone. It surprised this reviewer to find that there is quite a bit of playfulness on display throughout what ultimately amounts to an elongated sizzle reel for the star, Tara Macken. Not that I’m complaining, this flick is a ton of fun. It’s not every stunt performer
The Flashback Interview: Loretta Swit
I had the great pleasure of meeting my newest interview subject, Loretta Swit, at the Chiller Theatre convention in October of 2018. She was a very kind woman to meet, and was even okay with taking multiple pictures to make sure we looked good. I mentioned to her that I knew her publicist Harlan Boll, who set up my interviews in 2017 with Rip Taylor and Judy Tenuta and my interview earlier this year with Dee Wallace. I knew that Loretta Swit would make for a fascinating interview subject, and we spoke on Monday, November 26th about not only her acting, but her artwork and animal activism as well. We covered a lot of ground, so let’s jump right in. Say hello to Loretta Swit! Loretta: Hello. Johnny: Hello, Loretta. Johnny Caps here, calling for our interview. Loretta: Yes. Johnny: Hello, there. How are you? Loretta: I’m fine. Thanks. Johnny: Alright. I have my questions ready to go, starting with this: You’ve recently released the book Switheart: The Watercolour Artistry
Anjali Bhimani on Medusa in Stray Gods, Candela Obscura, Tabletop RPGs, Acting, Voice Acting – Interview
Anjali Bhimani has had an extensive career on stage, in television and films, but also has a rabid fanbase that appreciates her work in the video game sphere with major roles in games like Overwatch. As it turns out, she’s quite passionate about participating in another growing gaming subculture, the world of interactive tabletop role playing games. We had a chance to talk to Anjali Bhimani about her latest projects in that sphere and the enthusiasm was palpable. Anjali Bhimani: I started gaming when I was a little girl. I was tabletop gamer from age eight. My brother got me the D&D Starter Set, and I was off to the races. Then probably around high school, I started playing RPGs on the computer and I would I would venture to say that I stopped computer gaming in maybe like 2002 or 2003 for some ridiculous reason, that I can’t remember. Thankfully, I’ve come back to it. But now I’ve come back to it from the other side. It’s pretty fantastic.
