Open Invasion Event Hits Ship Of Heroes Tomorrow
If you’d like another chance to try out the long-in-development MMO Ship Of Heroes, your opportunity is coming shortly. The development team is holding what they call an “Invasion Test” and unlike previous tests, anyone will be allowed to play. If you want to try it, the team has some advice for you beforehand. For one thing, though the event is free, you need an existing account and a pre-built character to take part in it, so make sure you have taken care of those steps before it starts. Second, with your new, undeveloped and underleveled superhero, you probably won’t last very long if you’re not part of a team…so ask around and see if you can be invited into one. Your level will be temporarily boosted to match the rest of the team’s. The Invasion Event takes fifteen minutes to play, but if you want to stay longer, there will be multiple Invasions throughout the day and you’re permitted to play more than one. According to the PR, “the
Monstrum Goes Physical September 25
The survival horror game Monstrum was released digitally on consoles last May, and the PC before that. Publisher SOEDESCO promised a physical release would happen eventually, and it looks like they’ll keep that promise…it will be released physically on all consoles this September. The premise of Monstrum is that you’re stuck on a cargo ship, along with one other passenger…a bloodthirsty monster! Imagine an enemy as unstoppable as Nemesis, as cunning as the Xenomorph from Alien Isolation, and as lethal as a Master Tonberry (hey, they’re just as scary). That’s the creature you’re dealing with in Monstrum…it pursues you relentlessly, and you can’t kill it…you can only slow it down and get it off your trail for a while. Worse yet, if the monster gets you, that’s it. It’s permadeath — you have to start the whole game over. And the fact that the layout of the ship is different every time means it won’t be any easier on the second go! Even the monster is randomized — you won’t
You Can Now Play Tales From the Loop On The Roll20 Virtual Tabletop
Tales From The Loop is one of Free League Publishing’s most successful tabletop games, taking place in an alternate 1980s where weird monsters roam the countryside. It’s inspired spinoffs, been re-adapted as a board game, been re-envisioned as a TV series, and more. But until now, there was no official way of playing it online. Now there is. Free League announced today the Roll20 Virtual Tabletop now supports an official module for Tales From The Loop. The module contains everything the core physical version does: the rulebook, including the Four Seasons of Mad Science campaign, VTT-ready maps and diagrams, player handouts ready to share, and a new official online character sheet with a customized virtual dice roller. In Tales from The Loop, particle accelerator experiments conducted decades prior seem to have bridged the gap between our world and another one. Machines are malfunctioning for mysterious reasons, and unknown creatures no one has ever seen before are roaming the land. As one of the pint-sized kid characters that Tales From The
The Flashback Interview: Greta Blackburn
In 1997, to mark my 15th birthday, I rented three Eddie Murphy movies from the video store. One of those movies was 48 HRS, and that film was my first exposure to my newest interview subject. Greta Blackburn played Lisa, a hostage of Ganz (James Remar), and although her role was small, it was memorable. As I grew older, I would see Ms. Blackburn in movies like Chained Heat and Yellowbeard, and then I would become familiar with Greta’s work beyond that as a model, a musician and an author. I became Facebook friends with Greta Blackburn earlier this year, and we talked earlier this Summer about her long and varied career. I hope you all enjoy getting to know this incredibly beautiful and versatile performer. Say hello to Greta Blackburn! Johnny: Hello, Greta. Greta: Hi. Johnny: How are you? Greta: I’m well, thank you. Johnny: Alright. I have my questions ready to go… Greta: Good… Johnny: Starting with this: You first broke through as a model. How did you

Sony Will Let You Preorder The PS5 Directly From Them…If You’re Worthy
We still don’t know how much the Playstation 5 will cost, or the exact date it will go on sale, but we do know when you’ll be able to preorder it…sort of. Sony opened a mysterious waiting list today on its Playstation Direct store that doesn’t guarantee a Playstation 5, but gives the vague promise of having the chance to get one. A “preorder for a preorder,” basically. If you are selected, you will eventually be sent an E-mail from Sony containing a link to the product, and the time limit for your chance to preorder the following (note that you don’t have to take ALL these items): 1 PS5 Console or 1 PS5 Digital Edition 2 DualSense wireless controllers 2 DualSense charging stations 2 Pulse 3D wireless headsets 2 Media remotes 2 HD Cameras Not everyone who signs up will be given the chance, and it doesn’t appear to be a random drawing either. The most perplexing part of the FAQ is the explanation for Sony’s selection criteria: it’s
Netflix’s Altered Carbon Cancelled After Two Seasons
Unless your show starts with the word “Stranger” and ends with “Things,” you’re never truly safe at Netflix. The axe-wielding streamer has just announced the sudden cancellation of their sci-fi drama Altered Carbon, after a lot of hype and hopes that it would become their next mature-audience hit. Altered Carbon was a story set in a future cyberpunk dystopia where money literally means life. Technology has advanced to the point where human brains can be stored as data and transferred into a new host, thereby extending the participating party’s life indefinitely. Since it’s an expensive procedure, it’s a privilege only enjoyed by the wealthy…or the friends of the wealthy, in the case of Takeshi Kovacs, the resurrected soldier and focus of the short-lived show. Some of Netflix’s most recent cancellations have been due to the COVID-19 shutdown, like The Society. But they claim a different reason for this one: the expense of all the CGI work and special effects was too much to cover the cost of making it. As
The Flashback Interview: Sandy Helberg
My first exposure to my newest interview subject, Sandy Helberg, came through the movie Spaceballs, where he memorably played the character of Dr. Schlotkin, the plastic surgeon who was going to give Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) her old nose back if King Roland (Dick Van Patten) didn’t turn over the key to the air lock. As I grew older, I came to see that Sandy Helberg was an incredible talent as both an actor and a writer. Through the help of Kim Hopkins, my dear friend and former interview subject who also connected me to Stuart Pankin, I spoke with Sandy on Monday, August 17th, and I hope you all enjoy getting to know this great talent. Say hello to Sandy Helberg! Sandy: Hello? Johnny: Hi, Sandy. Johnny Caps here. Sandy: How are you? Johnny: I’m doing good. First of all, thank you for taking the time to speak to me. Sandy: No problem. Johnny: Alright. I have my questions ready to go, starting with this: You’re one of the
Deck Of Wonders Launches Kickstarter Campaign
Cincinnati-based Furia Games has announced the crowdfunding campaign is now open for their solo card-battling game, Deck Of Wonders. Fate is a powerful mistress, but what’s the source of that power? Maybe it’s the deck of cards she keeps with her at all times, as her most prized possession. Actually, today is one of those rare days Fate doesn’t have her cards….because you stole them! Boy, is Fate mad. She’s sent her friends to retrieve the Deck from you, and the only way to save yourself will be to use it against them. Along the way, you’ll meet other individuals who don’t happen to be powerful agents of Fate, but heard you have her cards and would like to swipe them from you. You’re the most popular person around! Deck of Wonders is meant as a solitary card game, but there is support for two-player co-op gameplay. To fend off foes like Cullin the Spoiled Prince, Aurora the Empath and others, draw your cards. Each card will contain a unique
The Sinking City Sinks Off The Digital Marketplace
We wrote quite a few newspieces on The Sinking City, the Lovecraftian detective game from Frogwares Studios and what was then called Bigben Interactive. The game’s publisher has since changed its name to NACON, and is now under fire from Frogwares, being accused of a breach of contract among other things. Caught in the middle: the game, which has been removed from most digital markets. Frogwares published an open letter on their website which states their agreement with NACON guaranteed a share of the profits as well as ownership of the game itself and all IP therein. Though NACON gave Frogwares those payments at first, they were usually late, and at some cases were only produced upon formal notice. Then, suddenly, NACON demanded The Sinking City’s source code for some reason, something they had no legal access to (they could sell the game, but not own it). Frogwares refused to hand over the code, so NACON stopped paying them. That decision launched a legal battle that has been going on
First Look At WandaVision’s Agatha Spinoff
Disney+’s Marvel content got off to a very strong start with the imaginative, innovative WandaVision…and then it was gradually downhill from there. But Marvel is finally putting some of the better shows on physical media, starting tomorrow with the one that started it all. You can pop the discs in and relive the mystery, the media satire and the exhilaration of finally seeing the MCU Wanda fully transform into the Scarlet Witch of the comics (y’know, before the movies screwed that up). The WandaVision Blu-Ray set will include several bonus features, but one can be viewed for free right now. It’s the first-ever look at Agatha, the WandaVision spinoff now in development. Disney rightly assumed someone was going to upload this preview online anyway, so they might as well do it themselves. Spoilers for those who haven’t seen the original show: Wanda’s quirky neighbor Agnes (played by Kathryn Hahn) was revealed to be the evil sorceress Agatha who planned to steal all of Wanda’s power to add it to her
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom: The Lost Trailer
The new Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer is out. Will Black Manta have to kill Aquaman to have a chance at killing Aquaman? Let’s watch and find out. This is it, folks: this is the last remaining scrap of the Old DC Cinematic Universe before the new James Gunn-led guard takes over. The first Aquaman was a relatively nice-sized hit for WB, but nothing is guaranteed in this Superhero Fatigue plagued world, especially for a continuity everyone knows is being abandoned and doesn’t matter. We doubt Aquaman 2 will sell very well. But it’s happening anyway. It’s several years after Aquaman 1 in Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, and our hero has settled down in Atlantis with his wife Mera and their new baby kid. But Black Manta is also still around and hasn’t given up on his goal to destroy Arthur Curry and rule Atlantis. He wants to kill Aquaman! He wants to kill him TO DEATH! Black Manta is so filled with rage he makes a pact
