Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures are releasing their latest thriller, The Devil To Pay, in selected theaters (drive-in and virtual) starting October 9. Lemon is a poor farmer making a scant living in an isolated Appalachian community. Her family owes a debt to a neighbor, and they’ve decided to collect a little sooner than usual — by threatening everyone’s life. They’ve already taken her husband, and she and her son could be next unless they can fight back. The Devil To Pay stars Danielle Deadwyler, Catherine Dyer, Jayson Warner Smith, Brad Carter, Luce Rains, Adam Boyer, Charles Black, Parisa Johnston, Tim Habeger, and Ezra Haslam. It was directed by Ruckus Skye and Lane Skye, and it will open in theaters two days from now, October 9. The movie is already available to watch on demand, released yesterday on VOD platforms. Customize Your Game With Doodle Dice
Mythroll Armory, inventors of the Tin20 Folded Dice Sheet, have struck again with another creative take on the analog number generator that makes tabletop games run. Whether they’re working on their own creation or just want to mix it up at the next D&D session, some prefer to make their own gaming dice. If you want to create something permanent, though, it means messing with molds, mixing resins and working with pressure pots — easy things to mess up for those just getting into it. You could pay someone else to craft your dice, but that costs even more. “We thought, ‘what if anyone could design their own unique dice, with little investment, regardless of their age or skillset?” says Dave and Joel, founders of Mythroll.” What if you could make a unique set of dice for each of your characters for the cost of getting one set from ‘those other guys?’” To solve this problem, Mythroll invented Doodle Dice. They’re sets of blank tabletop dice that come with eight
Remembering Eddie Van Halen
I was saddened to hear of the death of Eddie Van Halen on October 6th, 2020. Van Halen’s passing shook me because his work was a big influence on what my pop-cultural tastes would become. To honor Eddie’s memory, I would now like to talk about some of my favorite pieces of music involving his talents. Whether as a songwriter or a musician, Eddie Van Halen’s work will live on. My first exposure to Eddie Van Halen’s work came when I saw the movie Spaceballs. The song “Good Enough”, which opened the first Sammy Hagar-era album, 5150, was heard in the diner scene near the end of the movie. I think the song captured the mood of what many diners are like. Whether it’s the food or the atmosphere, it may not necessarily be the best, but it is “good enough”. The next time I heard Van Halen’s work came when I saw the video for “Right Now” on VH1 in the mid-90s. Coming from the album For Unlawful Carnal
A Resident evil movie reboot that is more faithful with the games is currently in the works
Finally, a Resident evil game with actual Iconic characters taking the lead instead of Alice is going to happen. The fan of the Resident evil videogames has an enormous dislike of the movies because of the existence of Alice. Alice is a character created by director Paul WS Anderson for the movie franchise. Anderson is not a fan of the videogames. He never played them. Anderson wants to make an Alice in Wonderland inspired zombie action movie starring his wife, Milla Jovovich. He gets the rights for the Resident Evil videogame franchise because he wanted to attract the fanbase with the title. On the sequel, he incorporated actual characters of the game and demoted them as sidekicks for Alice. The upcoming reboot by Sony will be more faithful to the source material, but there will still be some changes as the production will take some liberties. The upcoming reboot will be an Amalgamation of Resident evil 1 and 2. I think Resident Evil 1 and zero is a better connection.
Acute Misfortune Arrives On VOD November 3
Dark Star Pictures will soon be releasing the Australian biopic Acute Misfortune in the US. Both theatrical and digital releases are planned, though the “theatrical” releases will be virtual. Acute Misfortune is the life story of the controversial and tortured Aussie artist Adam Cullen. The film is based on Erik Jensen’s award-winning biography of the man. Most yanks have never heard of him, but now you can learn a thing or two about foreign art. Acute Misfortune stars Daniel Henshall (THE BABADOOK) as Cullen, and Toby Wallace (ROMPER STOMPER) as his boyfriend…and that’s about it. He lived a solitary life, which makes it easy for the casting department. The movie was directed by Thomas M. Wright. Look for Acute Misfortune in select virtual theaters in LA and Cleveland this week….but if you don’t live in either of those cities, do you have to travel to Cleveland just to watch it on your laptop? Probably not; how will they know. If you can wait a month, Acute Misfortune will receive a
MMO Starborne Releases Dissidence Update
Developer Solid Clouds has been running its MMORTS Starborne in open beta for the last six months. Last weekend the first major content update, subtitled Dissidence, hit the servers. Starborne is slower-paced than most other real-time strategy games, especially those with online elements. Accoding to Solid Clouds each server hosts a game that takes place over the course of eight weeks. A lot of that time is spent gathering your army, preparing for battle, and coming up with strategies…the game rises to a climactic battle in the closing weeks. Success depends on preparation! Here’s what’s been added: – Special hex effects: Hexes on the map which afford strategic benefits to your entire empire or your whole alliance and sector, when held. – Overhauled Rankings: A complete rework of many UI panels within the game, with a focus on exposing more metrics for players to measure themselves against. – Updated Alliance Panels: Continuation of the UI rework. Many quality of life improvements for alliance management, organization and planning for leaders and
Yakuza: Like A Dragon Pegged For November 10 Release
We finally have a definitive release date for Sega’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon. The latest installment in the long-running over-the-top RPG will be released on PS4, XBox One, XBox Series X and PC November 10. George Takei, Kaiji Tang, Andrew Morgado, Greg Chun and Elizabeth Maxwell will all be providing voices in the English dub. And there’s news about the Playstation 5 version too. Sega just announced today that anyone why buys the digital version of Like A Dragon will receive a free download of the PS5 version when it’s released. Be sure to send Sega a bouquet of roses for this gesture because, as we’ve seen this past month, not every company feels compelled to do this. The PS5 version will be released March 2, 2021. The first print run of Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be the Day Ichi (Day One) Edition, containing the exclusive Legends Costume Set — eight costumes representing popular figures from the Yakuza series. The physical version of this release will come in Steelbook
Yellow Rose, coming to theaters this October
This October theater will open again, and one of the movies coming this month of pumpkins is Yellow rose. Yellow Rose stars two of Broadway’s biggest icons. Eva Noblezada and Tony award-winner Lea Salonga. Both women have very impressive resumes in Broadway and Westend. Both theater sirens played the Iconic roles of Kim from Miss Saigon and Eponine in Les Miserables. Seeing these two women together is like a dream come true to many theater geeks out there. Yellow Rose is a feature film produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment. They may not be Hollywood household names, but theater fans know these women. Asian American actors playing the lead in mainstream Hollywood movies are a rarity. Seeing Filipino descent actors in mainstream Hollywood is a more peculiar rarity unless they are mixed race and white-passing. The Yellow Rose is not a forced representation quota that panders to small communities. It has a universal theme for everyone who wanted to pursue their dreams. Yellow Rose is about a Filipino American girl who
Herzog Zwei Comes To Nintendo Switch
Ask any veteran RTS fan and they’ll tell you — Sega’s Herzog Zwei is a true classic of the genre. That’s why it’s great news the game is getting republished for a new generation of gamers as part of the SEGA AGES series (AGES is SEGA backwards!) In Herzog Zwei you command a giant mech and an army of soldiers, and are tasked with taking down opposing forces, capturing outposts and producing support units. You can battle in three different modes: fighter plane, ground battle, and transportation. Since the action happens in real time, the enemy won’t stop and neither can you. The Switch version contains multiple improvements including save states (those who had to use the old password system will greatly appreciate this), an online multiplayer mode, replay ability, and a new interactive tutorial. Sharpen Your Skills with an all new in-depth interactive tutorial mode Pit Your Skills Against a Friend in new online 2-player action, in addition to split-screen support from the original! No More Level Passwords thanks
Radical Dreamers: The Chrono Cross Anniversary Hip Hop Album
Even after all these years (24 if you’ve been keeping track), the soundtrack of Chrono Cross is still one of the greatest in video game history. If you’re going to do a cover album of game melodies, CC is the perfect pick — which is why Random Beats is far from the first to do one. But it is the first we’ve heard to give the tracks a hip-hop flavor. Random Beats recruited musician Mega Ran, the voice of Amerigo Gazaway, and artist DJ DN to re-render the world of Chrono Cross with a funk beat — and while they were at it, throw in a few rearranged tracks from Chrono Trigger too. “I was late to Chrono Trigger as I just played through it in the last few years,” Mega Ran confesses, “but the game is still as fresh and outstanding as it ever could have been. I trust Amerigo and DN³ as they are not only two of my best friends, but some of the most passionate music
Oni Press Solicitations February 2024
It’s time for the Oni Press Solicitations February 2024. Here’s what Oni Press has planned for next February’s graphic novel entertainment. Have you been enjoying Scott Pilgrim Takes Off on Netflix? It was one of the series that put Oni on the map nearly twenty years ago (yikes). In 2024 it’ll be precisely 20 years since the first volume of Scott’s adventure came out, and to celebrate, Oni is preparing a 20th Anniversary Box Set in both color and black-and-white variants. The boxes contain the entire series in hardcover, a compliation of extra material, and a sheet of stickers, housed in a box sporting new art by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The sets will be in stores this July. They call themselves the Cemetery Kids: four friends who can’t get enough of the hot new video game “Nightmare Cemetery” and play it together every chance they get…which is every night, because the Dreamwave is a console you play in your dreams. But perhaps the device didn’t spend enough time in testing:
