“High Crimes” Blu-ray Review
After starring together in Kiss the Girls, Fox paired Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman up again for 2002’s High Crimes. Though not as well received as Girls, Crimes made its budget back domestically and served as another solid suspense/crime drama to add to the pairs film roster. This is all despite a poor reception by critics, who panned it for its predictability and retread of plots from other films that were done better and with a bit more subtly. SynopsisAshley Judd stars as Claire Kubik, a high-powered attorney whose perfect life comes down when her husband is charged with high crimes of murder. Enlisting the aid of a shrewd military lawyer (Morgan Freeman), Claire will risk her career and even her life to find the truth in this “head-snapping thriller” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). There’s a reason High Crimes came into theaters, hit home video and promptly disappeared. The reason, of course, is that it’s quite a mediocre film and as such you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would
“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” Blu-ray Review
After a slight departure from the usual way of telling things in X3: The Last Stand (mainly because of the original director and writers of the first two not returning for it), there was no real reason to continue on with the series as a core trilogy full of mutants. On top of that all anyone ever really cared about was Wolverine, so Fox cobbled together X-Men Origins: Wolverine for release in the spring of 2009. When an early work print leaked out, fans (who chose to watch it) complained about an uneven story and poor CGI…but being the work print, early impressions were put on hold until the finished product arrived in theaters a month or so later. Fans who ventured into the theater anyway were met with disgust: the work print and the final product varied very little. SynopsisLeading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine’s epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon
“Requiem for a Dream” Blu-ray Review
There are times when a films reputation precedes your viewing of it and you have no choice but to already make assumptions about it. Darren Aronofsky’s bleak and visually jarring Requiem for a Dream is one such film, which has had tons of praise heaped upon it over the years since its initial 2000 release. With several DVD editions already under its belt, a director’s cut Blu-ray release was bound to follow and Lionsgate presents the film with a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track and a whole roster of bonus features. SynopsisHarry Goldfarb (Leto) and Marion Silver (Connelly) are lovers in Brooklyn with their version of the American dream, setting up a small business and spending the rest of their lives in love. The two are also desperate heroin addicts, a compulsion that darkens their lives. Harry’s mother, Sara Goldfarb (Burstyn), is addicted to television. One day she receives a call from her favorite show and learns that she has been selected to appear on an upcoming broadcast. When she
“Castle – Season 1” DVD Review
A mid-season debut for ABC, Castle rode in with low hopes from all involved and…well, that’s really what it ended up delivering on. The late Monday-slotted crime dramedy starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic as a “mismatched crime-solving duo” didn’t really blow audiences away so much as mildly amused them each week with easily solvable crimes and easy to guess plot twists. Still, the chemistry between the leads was definitely there and as such ABC saw fit to renew the series for a second season. Will it last past that? If other recent ABC outings such as Eli Stone are any indication…then probably not. SynopsisA bestselling novelist (Nathan Fillion) and a New York City detective (Stana Katic) delve into real world crime, starting with a copycat killer who recreates the murder scenes depicted in his novels. Finding true life mysteries more stimulating than fiction, writer Richard Castle continues to offer his professional insights to Detective Kate Beckett—whether she wants them or not. Sparks fly and a hint of romance hangs
“The Girl Next Door” Blu-ray Review
If ever there was a movie that was portrayed for more than what it really was, it was The Girl Next Door. Despite being wrapped up in scandalous packaging and marketed as a teen comedy, the film’s “racy” plot of a high school student and ex-porn star falling in love left critics confused and very little in terms of revenue came from the films 2000+ theatre run. Despite performing poorly in theaters, the film remains mildly popular, if only for the DVD cover (now used again for this Blu-ray edition) and the sequence from the film that features a soaked Elisha Cuthbert at the front door of Emile Hirsche’s house. SynopsisA tongue-wagging, sexy comedy centers on blond, hot and mysterious, Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert, “24”) as The Girl Next Door with a not-so-good-girl past and Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild), the straight-laced overachiever with political aspirations who falls in love with her. The wildly revealing and hilarious comedy is available on unrated Blu-ray Disc with more skin…more sex…and more
“30 Rock: Season 3” DVD Review
When it comes to prime time comedies, NBC soundly trumps all other networks. While CBS may pop in there occasionally with some good humor, it’s usually hindered by their insistence on using laugh tracks still (we know when to laugh at jokes CBS…really!). Not so on NBC, which did way with laugh tracks years ago with such breakout hits as My Name is Earl and The Office. Shortly thereafter 30 Rock joined the fray and has since routinely trumped other network shows in both laugh out loud moments but also in primetime Emmy nominations (22, according to the sticker on the cover of the set). With the show about to begin its fourth season, fans who may have missed an episode or two (and had no access to Hulu for some reason) can now catch up with the complete third season on DVD. SynopsisRe-enjoy the complete third season of the Primetime Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-winning comedy 30 Rock, hailed by The New York Times as “its third season” and
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up” Wii Video Game Review
Taking a little deviation from the movie reviews you’ll find standard here at The World’s Finest DVD Report, let’s take a look at a new video game starring everyone’s favorite terrapins. Starring in the new highly addictive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up game for the Wii, our favorite heroes in a half-shell smash it up in this break-neck beat-’em-up! After selecting a character and picking one of the modes available, the mayhem begins and, admittedly, it’s incredibly addictive. During one my first run-throughs of the game, just testing out some of the different characters and levels, 90 minutes passed in a mere blink of an eye. I won a handful of victories and learned some hard-fought lessons, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now, this game may not be perfect, which became evident as I continued playing, but I can’t deny that it’s pure fun. Before I continue, I feel the need to note a couple things. First, this is my first review for a video game, so
“Observe and Report” Blu-ray Review
Seth Rogen seemed to have an unstoppable box office reign going for several years until 2009 proved that he was, in fact, fallible. It started with the animated Monsters vs. Aliens and spread into Observe and Report (we’ll discount Funny People as it received solid reviews), the Rogen starring comedy about a mall cop who aspires to be more. While we already had one mall cop film that performed shockingly well earlier in the year, there was hope that this Rogen comedy would find a similar audience…but it ultimately didn’t pan out. SynopsisBargain hunters at Forest Ridge Mall get more than they bargained for: a chubby flasher in a ratty bathrobe. They’re repulsed. Security guard Ronnie Barnhardt isn’t: “This disgusting pervert is the best thing that ever happened to me!” Catching the flasher may be his ticket to a real police job and to romance with a hot cosmetics-counter princess. Only one thing stands between Ronnie and destiny: a tall, handsome cop who actually knows what he’s doing. Seth Rogen,
“Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” Blu-ray Review
If ever there was a star to solidify himself into one genre it’s Matthew McConaughey. While he certainly works well in the romantic comedy genre, it seems lately that’s all he has been in (barring a few action/comedy hybrids and a really bad direct-to-video surfer movie). There’s good reason, of course: he’s eye candy. Also he can act fairly well, so those are the two minor elements that make him really desirable for the chick flick genre. But, as audiences found with his latest outing, he doesn’t always bring the goods and the poorly received Ghosts of Girlfriends Past fails to kick up any sense of originality as it merely Frankenstein’s two different stories together to create one big pile of meh. SynopsisConnor Mead is the kind of guy who dumps three girlfriends. At the same time. By teleconference. So when he attends his brother’s wedding he has a single goal: score with the only bridesmaid he somehow missed. But the ghost of his departed Uncle Wayne –who taught him
“Away We Go” Blu-ray Review
Doesn’t it just irk you when genuinely good looking films don’t make it to the theaters around you? Such was the case with Away We Go for me—if it was ever in town, it was very brief. On top of that I had trailers for it constantly airing on TV just teasing me with the funny little jokes in the film and the oddly cute pairing of John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. With semi-mixed reviews for this predictable fair, the so-called indie production (with a $17 million budget) raked in under $10 million worldwide. Which is a shame as it really was a genuinely heartwarming film for the most part. SynopsisJohn Krasinski (“The Office”) and Maya Rudolph (“Saturday Night Live”) star in the heartfelt film that explores the comedic twists and turns in one couple’s journey across contemporary America. Anticipating the birth of their first child, longtime couple Burt (Krasinski) and Verona (Rudolph) embark on an ambitious itinerary to visit friends and family in order to find their perfect home.
Godzilla And King Kong Are Coming To…Call of Duty
Generally, shameless corporate promotions are the realm of Fortnite. You haven’t truly made it until your parent company shells out millions of dollars to have a skin of your main character shoved into a battle royale. So when we heard Godzilla and King Kong would soon make guest appearances in a video game, Fortnite is where we assumed they’d show up. Not this time…the movie monsters are headed to Call of Duty! Three limited-time bundles have been added to Call Of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone this week. One, the “Kong Legendary Wade Skin,” turns your character into a giant gorilla — not just that, a gorilla with automatic weaponry, the most dangerous kind of gorilla! The bundle includes the “Temple of Kong Legendary Sniper Rifle Blueprint,” but you can outfit him with anything. As for the lizard, you can become him through the Godzilla Reactive Mastercraft Bundle, which comes with the “Godzilla Ghillie” Legendary Shigenori Skin and the “Breath Of Godzilla” Heroic Assault Rifle Blueprint. Appropriately, it shoots blue fire!
MultiVersus A fighting Game with characters owned by Warner Bros.
MultiVersus is a platform fighting game, Similar to the likes of Smash Bros and Brawlhalla. You will see characters team up and fight each other from characters owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. I never thought I will ever see Arya Stark from Game of Thrones will team up with Bugs Bunny to Fight Batman and Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. Game of Thrones is an Adult oriented IP so seeing it having a crossover with Scooby Doo and Steven Universe is unexpected. The first Cinematic trailer is all kinds of insane but in a good way. Superman teaming up with Iron Giant is the icing on the cake for me knowing Iron Giant Idolizes the comic book character. MultiVersus | Official Cinematic Trailer The Game is free to play but eventually it may get from paid DLC characters and skins if its successful enough. Characters will reprise their most recent voice actors from previous media. Maisie Williams will be voicing Aria Stark to reprise her Game of Thrones character. It will
