“Child’s Play” Blu-ray Review
Chucky is one of the most famous and notorious horror films around today. While it hasn’t ever been much of a success in the box office, it has always managed to turn a profit over the course of the four films that were made. Still, it was this first film that started the series and is one of the few entries in the series that was generally well received. With a genuine mystery plot wrapped up in the horror style that only a doll come to life could bring, Child’s Play arrives on Blu-ray full of all of the original jumps and scares that made it such a hit before. SynopsisThe “chills come thick and fast” (Los Angeles Times) as voodoo and terror meet within an innocent-looking doll inhabited by the soul of a serial killer who isn’t ready to die. From the Director of Fright Night comes a “clever, playful” (The New York Times) and stylish thriller with “excellent special effects” (Leonard Maltin) and heart-pounding suspense guaranteed to scare!
“The Proposal – Deluxe Edition” DVD Review
No doubt those who were watching TV during the months of May, June and July were smacked over the head repeatedly with advertisements for The Proposal. The genuinely witty (in appearance) comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds was backed up by some genuinely funny trailers, filled with quips, jokes and one liners that were easy to laugh at. As far as critics were concerned they shoved the film in the “predictable romantic comedy” category; as far as movie goers were concerned, however, they helped the $40 million budgeted film balloon to nearly $300 million worldwide in box office receipts. While critical reception can often have ill effects on a films box office performance…in the case of romantic comedies there’s almost always an audience, no matter how predictable they may be. SynopsisMargaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) terrorizes her publishing house co-workers with her abrasive, take-no-prisoners management style, especially her overworked assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). But when Margaret is threatened with deportation to her native Canada because of an immigration technicality,
“Drag Me To Hell: Unrated Director’s Cut” DVD Review
Not only does Sam Riami still “got it,” Drag Me To Hell shows he’s even better than before. After taking a long break from horror thanks to his work on the Spider-Man film series, among other movies, Riami returns to his horror roots in the staggeringly entertaining Drag Me To Hell. I can’t think of a movie this year that hasn’t been more hilarious, more gruesome, more chilling, and just flat-out fun than Drag Me To Hell. One of the most under-appreciated movies of the year, Riami’s horror opus finally claws onto DVD and Blu-ray where, not doubt, it’ll find the massive audience it truly deserves. Synopsis:Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is on her way to having it all: a devoted boyfriend (Justin Long), a hard-earned job promotion, and a bright future. But when she’s forced to make a tough decision that evicts an elderly woman from her house, Christine becomes the victim of an evil curse. Now she has only three days to dissuade a dark spirit from stealing her
“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – The Complete Second Season” Blu-ray Review
Becoming true cult hit in the second season, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles explored an unseen aspect of the burgeoning Terminator mythos. Only hinted in the movies, this series delves into how Sarah Conner and son John survived throughout the years leading up to the inevitable war between humans and the machines. And while the series was huge out of the gate, it dwindled down very quickly to a small yet dedicated audience, culminated in what seems to be the second and final season for this series. However after a shaky first season, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles managed to surpass all expectations and become a totally engrossing sci-fi series, admirably mixing great characters and interesting writing. Synopsis:The ultimate tale of man-vs-machine continues as a mother becomes a warrior, a son becomes a hero, and their only ally is a robot from the future in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – The Complete Second Season. The time: today. The stakes: all our tomorrows. A nascent AI, assisted by droids, continues
“Natural Born Killers: Director’s Cut” Blu-ray Review
The year was 1994 and a film named Natural Born Killers slid its way onto screens. The media outrage at the obscenity of the film was felt worldwide, with the film being banned from theaters in Ireland. As if that wasn’t enough, Senator Bob Dole came out in protest of the film, condemning it for its “promotion of violence”, although his argument later lost water when it was revealed that he had never actually seen the film. On top of that the film was met with ratings turmoil which resulted in Oliver Stone being required to edit the film to get it down to an R rating. Fans were disappointed when the 2008 Blu-ray was the theatrical cut only and Warner has responded in kind with this Director’s Cut Blu-ray release. SynopsisFrom world renowned director Oliver Stone comes a story originally penned by Quentin Tarantino that tells the story of a pair of “Natural Born Killers”, Mickey and Mallory Knox. Across Route 666, the pair rack up a cavalcade of
“Wrong Turn” & “Wrong Turn 2: Dead End” Blu-ray Reviews
As far as the horror genre goes there are a great deal many films that get made, get released on DVD and are never to be heard from again. Other films lie in wait and spring upon unsuspecting viewers with sequels to films that weren’t all that good to begin with. This latter description applies to Wrong Turn, which somehow received a direct-to-video sequel four years after the first film debuted in theaters. With a rotating main cast and a forest full of hungry mutated cannibals, the Wrong Turn series has certainly not been one of the most popular series to come out as of late, but with a third film in the works, Fox no doubt saw this is an opportune time to release the first two films on Blu-ray. Synopsis – Wrong TurnAn indescribable nightmare begins when a group of young friends is stranded on an isolated road deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, with no hope of rescue. Desperate and fearing for their lives, the
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” Blu-ray Review
It’s easy to harp on horror remakes that don’t even attempt to do justice to the originals they’re based on. But what about those that actually succeeds in some fashion or another? How do you act when you’re stilled genuinely scared by a remake, when you know from past experience that all remakes are generally cheap cash-ins with no heart? Well Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 2003 remake, fits into this dilemma as the horror is genuine, the acting is solid, and the gore is…well, everywhere. SynopsisGet help! That’s a good idea when carefree friends traveling the back roads of Texas run into trouble. So they ask for assistance at an eerie, ramshackle farmhouse. That’s a bad idea – one that cranks up the whirring, ripping terror of this fear-choked re-imagining of the cult fave The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Producer Michael Bay (Transformers), director Marcus Nispel (2009’s Friday the 13th) and their filmmaking team bring edgy contemporary style to a gory frightmare. Jessica Biel leads the cast of roadtrippers who must
“The Chieftains – Live at Montreux 1997” DVD Review
If you’ve ever journeyed into the Irish music genre then you’ll likely be met with only a handful of truly good talent. While recent bands like Flogging Molly have taken the Irish music genre and infused a bit of Ramones-style punk rock into it, classic bands like The Chieftains have been playing some of the best Irish music to ever hit the shelves. With a history spanning nearly fifty years, The Chieftains have become the penultimate band as far as Irish music is concerned and with this 1997 Montreux concert it’s easy to see why they’ve gone unmatched for as long as they have. SynopsisFounded by Paddy Maloney in 1962, The Chieftains were one of the first bands to popularize Irish traditional music around the world and today their status as one of the finest Irish bands of all time remains unchallenged. They have received awards from around the world including 6 Grammys and an Emmy and worked alongside some of the greatest names in pop, classical and folk music.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition” Blu-ray Review
The Disney animation library is one of the most popular in the world. Ask any kid in the US to name a Disney film and they would be able to blurt some title out with relative ease. This is in massive thanks to Snow White, which was one of Disney’s earliest and most successful films to date. The story is now considered an absolute classic among…well, pretty much everyone and chances are you watched it growing up as a kid…repeatedly. With the advent of the home video market the exposure to the story as only grown and Disney continues their Blu-ray releases of classic films with Snow White debuting in full HD and 7.1 surround as part of Disney’s Diamond Edition line of classics. SynopsisSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the time-honored story of a beautiful princess whose blossoming beauty disturbs her stepmother the Queen. Each day the Queen asks a mysterious magic mirror the quintessential question: “mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all.” As
“Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Blu-ray Review
Featuring Batman and Superman as headliners, fists fly and heroes come to blow in the latest animated feature from the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line. Based on the initial six-issue “Public Enemies” arc from the Superman/Batman comic series, Superman and Batman go toe to toe with a plethora of friends and foes in an attempt to stop yet another evil plot courtesy of Lex Luthor. And, yes, while this movie is just filled to the brim with overblown action sequences and fight scenes, it also doesn’t try to be anything else but a big “smash-em-up” with an assortment of different DC characters from beginning to end. As much as that may be a hinderance for the movie, it’s also the biggest selling point for Superman/Batman: Public Enemies as well. Synopsis:A desperate solution for a troubled country: Lex Luthor for President with the Justice League in the service of the government. Only Batman and Superman stand against the new regime – and their disloyalty proves to be exactly what Luthor
The CW’s Fall Schedule Looks Super-Bland
When you cancel all your shows, this is what you get. The CW just released the details on what it plans to do next season, and it’s nothing much. First off, a lot of the more interesting CW originals, the ones that survived that is, aren’t appearing in the fall. The Flash, Nancy Drew, Riverdale and Superman & Lois are being held for midseason, and so is the new Gotham Knights, meaning for the first time in forever there’s just ONE show on the network where someone dresses in tights and fights monsters (Stargirl, originally planned for the summer). Monday will be all about sports (All-American), Wednesday will be all about cowboys (Walker), and Friday will be all about comedians on stage (nothing’s changed about this one). While shows from other countries, Canada in particular, are no stranger to The CW schedule, they are usually used in the summer to avoid reruns of other shows. It looks like a forthcoming part of The CW’s new strategy will be to rely
