“Bela Fleck: Throw Down Your Heart” DVD Review
Documentaries have always been big business for film festivals and independent movie theaters, but rarely have they had such a presence on DVD lately as they have from documramafilms. In the past couple months alone they’ve pounded out several award winning documentaries that had previously only been seen by a few in local theaters and, very rarely, on television/PBS airings. Now, docuramafilms is bringing to DVD the Béla Fleck documentary Throw Down Your Heart, which has already accumulated several awards and nominations over various film festivals. Now those unable to see the film in its limited theatrical runs can now witness the inspiring documentary for themselves. Synopsis“Throw Down Your Heart” follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of the banjo and record an album. Béla’s boundary-breaking musical adventure takes him to Uganda, Tanzania, The Gambia, and Mali, and provides a glimpse of the beauty and complexity of Africa. Using his banjo, Béla transcends barriers of language and culture, finding
“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” Blu-ray Review
The year was 1992. The setting was New York City and the time of year was a snow laden Christmas. It saw the return of Macaulay Culkin as the precocious Kevin McCallister and how his family once again forgot (well…this time they just lost him) him for their annual Christmas vacation. As unlikely as the premise and scenario is, the film went on to enjoy a healthy box office life and it only further bolstered the career of the then unstoppable Culkin. For all intents and purposes the film was a giant cash-in on the first film and had a remarkable amount of product placement…but Fox at least had enough sense to stop at this second film. Until 1997 at least when they made a direct-to-video third film. And again in 2002. SynopsisKevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is back! But this time he’s in New York City with enough cash and credit cards to turn the Big Apple into his own playground! But Kevin won’t be alone for long. The notorious
“Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead” Blu-ray Review
Apparently Fox has more faith in this series than its fans do, as the third installment in the series is undoubtedly its worst. It was also shot overseas with a low budget, helmed by a SyFy channel movie director and employed by some mediocre actors. How does this differ from the previous films, you ask? Well I guess it doesn’t really, but damn if it isn’t really noticeable this time around. I mean this film is simply embarrassing to watch as it puts itself through all of the predictable and cliché horror film paces, with breasts, gore, and dismemberment occurring so early into the film you wonder if there’s anything to stick around for. And guess what? There isn’t. SynopsisThree times the fear… three times the horror… three times the terror! Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents another frightening addition to the Wrong Turn franchise, when the unrated massacre Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead is unleashed exclusively on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and DVD October 20. Three Finger and his
“Stargate – 15th Anniversary Edition” Blu-ray Review
The film that spawned numerous series and direct-to-video movies is now celebrating its fifteenth anniversary…and if you picked up the previous Blu-ray from Lionsgate for this film then you’re about be sorely disappointed in having to double dip so soon. You may be confused by my word choice there…”having to.” Surely there’s a choice? Well…quite frankly if you enjoyed the film enough to pick it up and own it, then you’re going to want to upgrade to the new 15th Anniversary Edition. It’s just that good. SynopsisStargate, the film that spawned three television series, two movies and a galaxy of fans, celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special edition Blu-ray Disc! The film, written and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), boasts a critically-acclaimed ensemble cast that includes three-time Emmy® winner James Spader, Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Kurt Russell and two-time Academy Award® nominee Djimon Hounsou. The Stargate: 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Disc contains both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film – for the first time on
“Toto – Falling in Between (Live)” Blu-ray Review
With the band now dissolved (and with little chance of it coming back together), fans have to take all they can get when it comes to new Toto material. Originally founded in 1977, Toto quickly rose to fame as an ensemble band and repeatedly had sold out worldwide tours; although their popularity in the United States wasn’t at quite the level it was overseas. Through the years the band exchanged and lost band members aplenty before finally it was down to only one surviving band member: Steve Lukather. After a brief dustup via the official announcement of Toto disbanding on his website, fans haven’t had anything to look forward to…until Eagle Rock dusted the March 2007 concert off for a Blu-ray release. SynopsisToto were formed in LA in the late 70’s by a group of friends who were all much in demand session musicians. They went on to epitomize the classic American pop/rock sound of the 80’s and 90’s with hit albums and singles including Hold The Line, Africa, I’ll
“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” Blu-ray Review
After the (rather surprising) success of 2008’s Tinker Bell a sequel to the direct-to-video film was inevitable. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, however—the film was popular for a reason as it was one of the first genuinely good made-for-DVD films that Disney had produced in years, with both its target group (young girls) and the purchasing group (parents) enjoying it almost equally as much. Pile on top of that the fantastic animation and visuals and you had a winning combination. So can we really begrudge Disney for releasing another film so soon? SynopsisIn Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure Tinker Bell’s greatest adventure yet takes place in Autumn, as the fairies are on the mainland changing the colors of the leaves, tending to pumpkin patches, and helping geese fly south for the winter. The rare Blue Moon will rise, and when its light passes through the magical Fall Scepter that Tinker Bell has been summoned to create, Pixie Hollow’s supply of pixie dust will be restored. But when
“Eminem: Live From New York City” Blu-ray Review
Love him or hate him, Eminem has definitely created a name for himself and made for some truly entertaining news stories over the years. Those fortunate enough to still enjoy his music after we were inundated and saturated with it over past decade will no doubt appreciate a Blu-ray release of his 2005 New York City concert that garnered so much attention and praise, both from those who attended it and from those who wish they attended it. As vulgar and obscene as he is entertaining and engaging, Eminem enraptured a massive audience that night and say what you will about his life and the way he presents himself…he definitely knows how to get a crowd worked up. SynopsisEminem is THE global rap superstar. This concert was filmed at Madison Square Garden’s in New York in 2005 at the culmination of his final tour prior to his retirement from live performance. It’s a spectacular show with multi-level staging, amazing lighting, and guest appearances from D12, Obie Trice and Stat Quo.
“Monty Python: Almost The Truth” Blu-ray Review
Whenever casts of old shows come together for a reunion of sorts, it’s always questionable. Not that it doesn’t hold some kind of perverse enjoyment for the fans of it; it’s just not something that really sticks with fans after the special is over. Plus the creators are often very reluctant to go back…I mean just look at Seinfeld. That shows only now receiving a pseudo reunion on the most recent season of Curb Your Enthusiasm just because Larry David suddenly had a brilliant idea of doing it, although time will tell if it’s a success. But never mind that rambling, the point I’m trying to make is reunions often suck…but when it comes to Monty Python, it’s hard for anything they do to be anything less than hilarious. SynopsisMonty Python reunites in this outrageous comedy and also features some of today’s biggest comedians including Jimmy Fallon, Eddie Izzard, Dan Aykroyd, and Seth Green. The Pythons are matched against their contemporaries: rock stars, comedians, actors, politicians, Python-haters and potential axe
“Iron Man: Armored Adventures – Volume 1” DVD Review
Quick, what do you do after you have a surprise success with a major comic book movie of a character that nobody had really heard of previously? Why, you fire up production on the sequel and start up an animated series, that’s what! While no one saw the success of Iron Man being as strong as it was once it finally bowed out of theaters, studios were quick to react. The Iron Man Armored Adventures series debuted in November of 2008 on the Nick network and fans of the armored hero found the series to be an odd mixture of the Iron Man mythos while at the same time also appealing much more to the younger crowd. SynopsisJoin the adventures of teenage prodigy Tony Stark, and his alter ego Iron Man, as he uses his technological inventions to battle villains and save the world! Teen genius Tony Stark ahs just finished his greatest invention: the Iron Man armor. But before he gets to show his dad, Tony’s world is shattered.
“Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America. A Final Night with George W Bush” DVD Review
As far as impersonations of former President George W. Bush go…well, there are quite a few who rank up at the top. Some are overly hokey or a little too hyper-exaggerated. Some work on superficial levels but don’t really grasp the essence of Bush’s nature. It’s a tough impression to pull off…but it’s Will Ferrell’s turn as Bush that struck the balance of reality and comedy. So it’s fitting that he gave the impersonation a final send off…with a stint on Broadway. While a live broadcast of the performance was delivered on HBO, those without the premium cable network have been unable to see the presentation…until now. SynopsisIn his first-ever HBO special, superstar comedian/actor Will Ferrell (Anchorman, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) takes viewers on a sentimental journey through the life, legend, and legacy of the 43rd U.S President, portraying George W. Bush in this live performance from Broadway’s Cort Theater. It’s a night to remember as George W. Bush bids us farewell! Obviously not being a fan
Stranger Things Season 4 Will Be Ridiculously Long
This morning, Netflix put the first eight minutes of Stranger Things Season 4 on their YouTube channel. That’s right — one week ahead of their official release, you can see these eight minutes for free. How can they afford to do that (especially now)? Well, they have a lot more where that came from. Netflix has revealed exactly WHERE the season will be split in half and what length each episode will be. The season is nine episodes long, but that number is an illusion. The individual episodes are so lengthy we would go so far as to call this a fifteen-episode season. Episodes one through five run an average of 75 minutes. Episode seven goes on for an hour and a half. But it’s the season finale that breaks the record, dragging on for TWO AND A HALF HOURS. With breaks as easy as pushing a button, few but the die-hard will be watching them whole. This knowledge makes the split point make a bit more sense…seven episodes are
Danny Trejo Is THE PREY June 7
It’s always cool to see Danny Trejo whenever he pops up. And you never know where he’ll pop up! He most recently appeared in, of all things, two episodes of Pamela Adlon’s Better Things last month, and soon he’ll be starring in his next action thriller, The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus. In The Prey, Trejo’s character is leading a group of mercenaries in Afghanistan. When they’re ambushed by the Taliban, they and a nearby group of US soldiers (this was filmed a while ago) retreat into a cave, where a sudden rock slide traps them in with a monster called the Karnoctus. But if you ask us, the monster is the one trapped in with Danny! In addition to Trejo, The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus stars Nick Chinlund (Chronicles of Riddick, Con Air), Adrian Paul (“Highlander: The Series”), Kevin Grevioux (Underworld), Fahim Fazli (Argo, Iron Man), Adolfo de la Parra, Justin Arnold and Masika Kalisha. The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus will be given a very limited theatrical run (as in,
